Hi!

I am completely new to forums and this is the first time I have ever posted a thread but I’m a little concerned about my piggie, Spice, a 7 month old Peru sow who is acting a little under the weather. I thought it’d be worth a shot to see if anyone has any advice/similar experiences.

Spice is normally really lively, cheeky piggie, who is the first to arrive waiting for her veggies or treats, always running around and bossing her cagemate, Pumpkin, around.

Now, I’m a huge worrier so I could be over reacting a little, but throughout the day Spice has been acting really lethargic, lying down at every possible chance and has just uninterested in everything. She has eaten, but only a very minimal amount - very unlike her. She’s not even willing to move at the sound of her treat bag being rustled - she’s normally up like a shot.

I also noticed her dragging her bum across the floor, which is weird as she’s not done this before. When she does it’s only for seconds at time, before walking as normal on her hind legs. She is also crying out whenever she is been stroked, even though we are barley touching her. :(

I think I’m going to get her checked over at the vets, but I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced this kind of behaviour, or any advice as to what I could do to make her feel a bit better.

She’s worrying me sick!

Thank you very much!

It sounds like she is definitely under the weather, so yes do get her to the vet. If you can get her seen today even better. The fact that she is not interested in food indicates something is wrong. It is difficult to say what as the vet needs to diagnose. In the early stages of illness a pig acts much the same way regardless of what is actually wrong.

If she is not eating you will need to step in with syringe feeding. Here is our guide:

Welcome to the forum.

welcome to the forum :D

yes sounds like she needs a vet visit - those symptoms could range from Urinary Tract Infection to mites & anything else in between.
I agree with Helen a vets diagnosis (& probably medication) will be needed.
Let us know how she gets on.

healing vibes being sent to your poorly poppet. xx

Thank you so much both. I will definitely be getting her into the vets as soon as possible.

She has now eaten a few bits of veg and is munching away on some hay, which is good. It’s nothing in comparion to her usual hungry self and I will definitely introduce syringe feeding if needed, but for now she’s having at least something at a regular intival.

It’s horrible seeing her under the weather.

Thank you for reassuring me with the vet! I will let you know how she gets on.

Faith xx

Update on Spice - she has been on her first visit to the vets and it turns out she is in quite a lot of back pain! Not sure how she has managed it but she has been given some piggie safe pain killers and she is already showing a lot more life.

I’m going to keep a close eye on her, but she’s currently munching on her hay. :)

Thank you for all of your help and concern!

Faith, Pumpkin and Spice xx
