My girl Ginger is getting a cyst removed from her face, and the vet has prescribed Baytril prior to the surgery to help decrease the size and prevent spreading infection during surgery. They said that these antibiotics are not mandatory but recommended... so I'm trying to decide what is best. I do plan on giving her probiotics if we decide to use the antibiotics (we have bene-bac or can give poop soup from her sister), but I'm so worried to mess up her good bacteria. Especially because I've been reading horror stories about Baytril and Guinea Pigs suddenly dying. The vet seems to have prescribed a high dose (I calculated it to be 8.3g/kg twice a day). I trust my vet but I just wanted to see if anybody had an opinion or a similar experience and what they did.

Baytril is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics and I can assure you that there probably aren’t many of us on here who haven’t used baytril multiple times at some point or another. I'm really not sure you can link baytril and piggies dying in that way - death was most likely as a result of the original illness not the baytril.
Yes it does also kill the good gut bacteria but it is also needed to kill the bad, and poop soup or probiotics can deal with that. You should not avoid antibiotics when they are needed because an untreated infection is much much worse.
