Hi so my guinea pig is due to go in for a dental on thursday due to overgrown back teeth. But i am very worried about the anaesthetic as i know it is risky for guinea pigs. I was firstly wondering if anyone had advice for this? Has anyone else's GPs undergone anesthesia and they recovered ok?
Secondly, i was going to phone my vets and also other vets in the area to see if anyone is willing to do it without the anaesthetic. But if not does anyone know of a vet in scotland that will do GP dentals without anaesthetic? I am willing to travel a few hours. I have heard about the Simon and Kim Maddock Cat and Rabbit Clinic but its in Birmingham which is an 8 hour drive from me...while I'm willing to do it i feel that is just too stressful of a journey to drive 8 hours, have to get a dental, then drive 8 hours back...So anyone know a clinic in scotland that will do the same?

Hi, I believe that Simon and Kim in Northampton and Ellie Whitehead in Matlock are the only vets who do conscious dentals.

@Bill & Ted used to travel from Cornwall to Northampton with her piggies to have conscious dentals with Simon and Kim and they coped very well.

@furryfriends (TEAS) runs a sanctuary in Northampton for guinea pigs with dental issues and if she has the time and space, will often board guinea pigs who live far away whilst they are getting dental treatment from the Maddocks

I can fully recommend Simon and Kim Maddock, they are the go to vets in the UK for anything dental and conscious dentals are great for your Guinea pig as no nasty anaesthetic risks to deal with. My Ted and Bill travelled quite happily on a round trip of 12 hours. As long as you have a carrier with a blanket/fleece over and some food to eat and a little hay inside. Your piggie will settle and probably sleep most of the way. You will get a proper assessment and work will be done there and then.

If you can get there, please do, as you might save yourself the stress of a possible poor dental which can actually make matters far worse. they are in Northampton CAT AND RABBIT CARE CLINIC | Northlands Vets

Good luck

My very sick piggy had two generals just 5 days apart one for a CT scan and one for a root absess and tooth removal and he bounced back from both.

Best of luck I hope everything goes well for you and your piggy.
