hi everyone, i have had my 2 girls for 2 weeks now, and am looking at getting them a larger space as they will be getting bigger soon! i have been looking at 2 story wooden hutches, with ramps between the two floors. the girls live in my room, is there anything that makes using a wooden hutch indoors a bad idea?

thanks!

I'm not sure it would be a bad idea. I suppose it just depends on how big the hutch is. You want your piggies to have plenty of room of course :)

thanks for your quick reply :)

the one i am looking at is at the local pet shop and these are the diameters height:112.50 x width152 x depth61cm its two stories with a ramp so they get to use a lot of the height, and it wont take up much more space than their current one, except vertically obviously, and as they love to rampage round their current home chattering away i thought theyd love haveing a ramp to scurry up and down in the middle of the night when i am trying to sleep! :P

I don't see any reason why a hutch can't be used inside, I know a lot of forum members already have one inside so why not :)

At least if you get one of Scott's hutches, he can finish it so it looks like a piece of furniture. ;)

I have a hutch inside and it has worked better than any cage I have tried. The piggies have a safe place to hide (behind the closed door section) and a run around space they are happy to come to the door and see me or the dogs. And I have storage space underneath. They are a lot more confident as nothing can come over the top of them to scare them as it could in their cages.

I have lined the walls with stick on floor tiles and would recommend using lino and tiles in inside and watch for damp patches.

That said it is a bit small for them so I am moving them to the shed in August so they will have a ramp and hopefully the whole shed to run around in.

just check the interior size of the hutch if you can, I bought one online and the measurements were of the roof..........big OOPS

am so excited to move them to shed.

Sorry it is being made now lol
I'm so busy as I have another business.
I can make what you want just let me know.

I brought a 5ft double hutch from p@h about 4 yrs ago. Best thing I ever did. At the beginning the 4 girls I had couldn't manage the ramp so I sectioned it off into 2 separate compartments then they came together for floor time. I was able to leave the bottom part open during the day so they had floor time from when we got up - 6 o'clock till they went to bed about 10pm. During the time I've had the hutch I've also been able to use it ( top part) as storage for their blankets and a brilliant cage for a couple of hamsters. As well as taking on a couple of foster pigs which have now become long term residents.

I have a p@h bluebell hutch in my lounge! It is really handy because as it has a solid roof I can store all the food/treat hay etc on top of it. You will just have to make sure that you block the space under the hutch as they love to hide there given the chance!

sounds brilliant midge, i have my heart set on a double storey one as they like to run around a lot, and think they will really enjoy the ramp, have looked at something on here recommending ramp tunnels to help make ramps more secure for the pigs. next step will be to measure their current cage, then go down to the store and measure the hutch i am looking at to see how it compares, and thanks for the idea about lining the walls with tiles or lino Sophie, is that to stop it getting damp?

If only I had a bigger shed, I'd treat the pigs to this hutch, so they'd have lots of space. ;)
