So i really need some advice.

Saw a vet today with my 2 piggies who said that wooden cages are not the best idea, they have a fungal infection and its hard to clean wood properly etc.

The problem is that my husband spent many hours and lots of money to build a beautiful cage for them with wood.

Does anyone else house in wooden cages? What do you use to clean? How do you protect against fungal infections? Really could use some advice before I tell my husband! :red

I volunteer at Crawley guinea pig rescue and we lined all the hutches with vinyl flooring. This really helps keep the bottom of the hutch dry and can be replaced easily if needed. Virkon S is a good cleaner as it has anti fungal and anti bacterial properties. You buy it in sachets or tablets and make it up with water, then put in a spray bottle and off you go. :)

thanks thats a really good idea, i currenly line with dog accident mats (don't know how you call these in English) which so far have kept the bottom of the cage dry because of plastic on the underside.

Do you house then in Wooden Cages? How about the sleep boxes? Because my husband also made these from wood? Should i change these do you think or just clean with your recommendation and carry on.....?

The rescue piggies have wooden hidey houses. These can also be cleaned/ given a good scrub and left to air dry. :)

I think I will carry on with the wood, clean well and air dry etc and see how we go. Thanks again for the input.

I've always used wood for mine, both guineas and rabbits.

I use hibiscrub to clean them with too, and is really good as is a disinfectant but safe for animals, they use it in vets etc.
make sure they are cleaned out regularly too whihc keeps infection down. when one of mine had a fungal infection i went to the et and he told me what it was and we bathed them in anti-fungal shampoo stuff. cant remember the name of it but it worked really well. I think the main thing is just to keep on top of cleaning etc which just helps to prevent it coming back.

Vinegar is also a good cleaner for hutches :)

Give them a good scrub out once a month (obviously do your regular cleans as well!) and you should be fine!

Plus you have the weather in Greece to allow the hutch to dry!

thanks everybody, you've given me the input I need to carry on with the wooden hutch and sleep boxes. Here comes the vinegar tomorrow and perhaps I will clean them out more than twice a week and go for 3 times as well.

Meanwhile I will check out the other cleaning fluid recommendations here and see what I can find.

Happily popocorning at the moment with their fresh hay today. :)

xx

i've just spent the last 2 hours giving the hutch, sleep boxes and everything else in sight a thorough clean with vinegar and water solution, then left it out in the sun to dry (it is 30 degrees here today :(|)). I will get that fungal infection if its the last thing I do! They also both had their cream.

I put it all back together, fresh hay, fresh veggies, fresh water etc etc etc.

My piggies are chuttering, popcorning and generally very happy. They are such a joy to watch. x)
