Oscar was in the shop on his own for a while, he has now been nurtured and I am waiting till its time to get him a lady-friend. I have has him for about a month now and he has not made a sound, he is happy to eat from my hand etc He is in a large run in living room and takes mad half hours as I call them doing laps and jumping , so he appears to be happy enough I hope, so why so quiet?

I wouldn't worry, especially if he seems happy in himself. Some piggies are very vocal, while others barely make a sound. You may find that when the time comes for him to meet a ladypig that he'll find his voice :)

Are you going to a rescue, rather than a shop, to find him a friend? They'll help make sure that their pigsonalities are well matched.

I think I had my boars about 2 months before they started wheeking at me? Also he does not have anyone to "talk" to yet - I wouldnt worry, I'm sure he will start talking when he gets a friend :)

I am wanting to rescue, keeping an eye on sspca but it seems to be mostly boars or female already in groups. I really wanted just one female for him, wouldn't mind a boar but feel a bit bad as I nutured him

Since he is neutered I would definitely get him a girl as this is the stablest of piggy bonds, no chance of fallouts like with two boars. As for his silence he could get quite vocal given time or when he acquires a cagemate or it could just be his personality. My Hazelnut was alone for a few months before we got him his friend and he was very loud when wheeking for his veggies. Peanut Butter arrived & proved to have a shockingly ear-piercing wheek which seems to have dampened Hazelnut as he now wheeks very softly - you have to be right by the cage to hear him.

I had one pig who i adopted on her own to join with other two i was adopting the following week. She developed mites so she was kept isolated for three weeks. In that time she never wheeked. The other two joined her and she wheeked that evening. Maybe when he gets a friend he will!

Hi Carol-Anne, a big :wel:to the forum...

We maybe could wave at you from our window as we're only along the road from you at Burntisland. It's great that your thinking of a getting a wifepig for Oscar once his 6 weeks post op. is up. We can highly recommend Hutches rescue in Alyth http://www.hutches-boarding-rescue.org.uk/ as Joanne would ensure the best match for him. We adopted our neutered boar Ouzo and his 2 wifepigs Morgan & Tia from Hutches. We suggest that you send Joanne an email as not all of her available piggies for adoption are on her web page and we're sure she will be delighted to hear from you.

If you're looking for any more info feel free to PM us and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

I hope that Oscar soon finds a wife pig. Some piggies are much less vocal than others, even if they are in a pair or a group. One of my 4 rarely makes a sound but is perfectly happy and healthy. When the quiet piggies wheek it is all the more precious to hear.

Don't worry - your boy will find his voice as soon as he has company! I've had the odd silent piggy on arrival, but they have all found their voice. Some are by temperament more vocal than others.

Have you spoken to the rescue about you looking for a single sow to pair up with Oscar, or just been looking at the website? The latter can often be deceiving.

just been looking

Some pigs aren't as chatty as others. One of mine 'talks' all the time to the people (she sounds like someone rubbing wet hands on a balloon, she has a very distinctive voice.) The other talks to the other pig and wheeks for food, but doesn't chat when she's sitting with us the way the other does.

That's great.. You might wait a bit to hear from her as she runs the rescue single handedly but she will get back to you. If there is anything we can do to help you in the meantime please feel free to get in touch.
