I have two Guinea Pigs, Butterscotch and Honey. They have a problem. They won't run around when I take them out of their cage. They just sit there. If they are in the same room as the cage they run up to it and bite the wire trying to get back in. What do I do?

same with mine they just sit there:...

My pigs did that but if you "chase them" (crawl right behind them) they might run or tap your pigs lightly on the butt area with your hand or a lightsaber they will run...
If your pigs chew the bars remove then and make them run back :)

Their obviously nervous - make sure they have plenty of hideaways on the floor for them

guinea pigs don't really like wide open spaces, it makes them feel exposed, so it'll take them a while to get used to running around your living room for example.
I have a boar who's 18 months old, if you have him on the sofa he doesn't sit for long, he jumps off the edge so that he can get on the ground and then spends about an hour just running around the room, behind the sofa's, into the kitchen - he's a pain to catch again, but it does take a while for them to get used to it.

you just have to keep taking them out, give them places to hide, and eventually they'll run around like my lad :))

"Making your piggies run" does NOT help the issue, it won't create a climate of trust, just one of fear.

How long have you had your piggies? Have you got "shelters" of any description within sight (tunnels, cardboard boxes, chairs, side tables, heaps of towels etc.), so piggies can start exploring from safe bases or it is just a wide open expanse with only the cage to get shelter?

Guinea pigs are prey animals and any open spaces scream "danger" to them. It also takes time for them to settle in and work up the courage to explore new places. Think about it from the perspective of a guinea pig and I am sure you will find things to make run time much more interesting. But firstly, give them TIME!

yes i agree with others they need little hideys so they can run under

Cardboard boxes, tunnels, I use plastic footstools from pound shop, just leave them for a bit, they need to smell their own scent on the floor, once they get used to the space they will run around.

Try scattering their favourite food around the floor they will soon be walking around :(|)
