A week tomorrow (15th March) I will be taking dear Kanga Pig to the vet for a spay operation. She has been very hormonal for months and it's now almost constant - chasing her sister about and trying to hump her, lots of rumbling and discord in the Piggy Palace. Both piggies have lost weight due to all the running about which leaves less time for eating. Kanga has had some investigations (ultrasound, x-rays) which didn't show up visible ovarian cysts but as I understand it the ones which cause this kind of extreme behaviour are likely to be very small anyway so may well not show up on a scan. So I have decided to go ahead with the spay, as neither of them are really very happy with the current situation. Kanga is 3 years old and otherwise fit & well which is in her favour but obviously I am still rather concerned about her prospects, just because any surgery is a risky event.
Hopefully she will come back to us, recover, and get back to being a plump little piggy again.
I will be washing out the recovery ward (a small GP cage) so I can keep her separate while she recovers, and monitor her bowels & bladder, and more easily give her any meds she will come home with. I also have a stock of Critical Care just in case she needs a bit of help with eating post-op (I have been asked to take her in with a packed lunch for afterwards, so they can tempt her to eat once she comes round from the anaesthetic). Please will you all keep your fingers crossed that she does come home to use all of this stuff?

Fingers crossed all goes well. But I wouldn’t separate her from her friend once she’s home though. In fact, if it’s allowed, I’d ask for her friend to accompany her when she goes to the vet.

Good luck Kanga... it will all be over soon. Short term pain is long term gain! Be happy 💕

PS: I'd also be thinking about keeping them together as much as possible xx

Good luck Kanga. Your life will be so much better once you have had your operation. xx

Good luck to Kanga. I’m sure she will feel better once her troublesome ovaries have been removed.

Hope everything goes well for Kanga, then she will feel so much better x

Best wishes to you & Kanga.
Whenever one of our piggies has had to go in to the vets for any kind of procedure they have been very keen for the companion pig to attend as well. (I'm sure it's not just so that the receptionist & nurses who are piggy slaves can have extra cuddles! 😂)

I will ask about taking Binky in as well but I think they will say no as apparently Binky was a right pain when she went in as company before (she sat on Kanga and wouldn't let them get Kanga out of the carry box). Hopefully Kanga will only be there until she has properly woken up, and not have to stay overnight.
Can I just ask, if you have your piggies in together post-op how do you tell whether the recovering pig has done poos/wee?
