Has anybody tried something like this or this product?

http://www.adsorbex.co.uk/itmidx5.htm

It says it is safe for pets and for hutches but I do not have a clue if it really is or not. Would it cause upset stomach in GPs if they ate it?

I'm looking for something that will take some of the odour out (ofcourse cleaning the cage a little everyday and fully every week + giving GPs regular baths)

If it isn't safe for guinea pig cages then I can just put it around the room.

I think the idea of the product is to sprinkle it on the cage floor then layer on newspaper and then whatever bedding you use. I don't think it would work sprinkled around the room.

My rule of thumb is if there's a bit of doubt/worry I don't use it, just to be safe.

I'm afraid i cant give you a definate answer, but i would suggest not. Also, given the description of how it works (absorbing exess liquids) I wouldnt imagine you would really need it with piggies. A good way to keep the cage smelling clean (i have found, but others have different methods) Is to use a top layer of fleece, then a matress protector, then pampers disposable baby changing mats. :)

I agree, I am not completely sure it is safe although it says it is natural and safe if a pet eat its. Maybe an air purifier might be a better option?

In my cage I am hoping to have a layer of waterproof sheet, then rspca puppy training sheets (I think they are similar to the pampers thing?) then a layer of fleece and then extra towels in area they will poo more (if they do have a specific area for poo :)) ) Do you think this will keep smell down?

My mother has a very sensitive sense of smell. She even thinks my birds smell but they do not smell at all! Neither does their droppings!

I am thinking of getting an air purifier that deals with removing odour but I just wonder if they even work...

I dont know about the air purifyer, however the only thing that smells about guinea pigs, is there urine after a while (same with any animal.) I have found the pampers thing cut down on that, because they absorb the smell as well as the urine. They are very similar to puppy pads, i have just found them better for me personally. :)

However, i think that if you only have the pads, then fleece you will have to change it very regularly as they wee alot! :) It may be better to have fleece, then an absorbant layer (ei matress protector or towel) then the pads. :)

Ive used the one from p@h and tbh i dont think it worked and stopped using it. We used vet bed at the time so my boys couldnt get access to it and they never got ill or anything when we used it but i think its a waste of money.

I use an air purifier and i love it. My livingroom constantly smells like fresh air :)) Its also good for your piggies too :)

Thats a good idea, thank you... it will be better to have the training pad things on top of fleece, it will look less fancy but cleaning will be so much more easy! I think? LOL

Would you happen to know how long the urine takes until it stinks? Also is it that bad? How stinky would you rate it? Stinky like public toilets? eew they smell so bad your gagging before you even step in :)>>>

Ok, thank you! I will definately get an air purifier and see how things go. I hope you don't mind me asking, but could you tell me what the name of your air purifier is please?

Thanks for all your help :)

Don't put the training pads on top of the fleece, the piggies may eat them rolleyes

I use a layer of newspaper at the bottom, then towels, then a mattress topper cut to fit the cage, then the fleece on top of everything. Mine gets changed fully every 4th day & doesn't really smell much at all. Don't use any chemical air fresheners or room sprays near piggies, they are very sensitive to anything like that. Depending on the size of your cage if you can fit in a tray for their hay they will poop in there most of the time, & you just change that & clean it daily. Put a little newspaper in the bottom & hay on top.

With regards to towels where they wee most, there is a chance they can get their claws caught in the loops on towels, so I use extra pieces of fleece I have cut down & hemmed & put them in the corners & change them daily.

HTH :)

:)) Those greedy little piggies! They have all the hay in the world but that is still not enough ?/ lol

I cannot use sprays in the house anyways because I have budgies and they have poor respiratory systems so that supports the no spraying rule at home :p

I have an intention of buying a small litter tray and then putting the tray there and hoping most of the poops will be there.
Because my mother is a bit strict on the cleaning policy, I am going to quick clean the cage every day and then do a proper clean weekly. E.g. everyday I will hoover the fleece etc and perhaps change the fleece and every week I will change everything and use disinfectant etc

Looks like I am going to be busy busy in a couple of months :)

Thank you for your post!

Omg thank you! I was going to ask this and make a new thread lol

Last time I was shopping with my boyfriend and whereever I go, I am looking out for things for the guinea pigs and putting it down on my list. We saw towels but they have so many small loops and I know that my budgies nails would easily get caught on them and thought a GPs paws would get caught too.

I might just stick to fleece then, washing them is hard though...

Well actually fleece dries much quicker than towels do anyway (I am guessing your mum does the washing lol) I wash my little pieces of fleece maybe every third day or if they get a bit wet/poopy then just change them then. Give them a really good shake or hoover before putting in the washing machine though else your mum might not like the repair bill when the hay blocks the machine up lol :)) I find the main fleece stays really clean that way & smells less. Your mum will fall in love with your piggies anyway so smell won't be an issue rolleyes

You could get a wash bag like this one to keep the machine clean :

Get a jumbo one if you can.

hahaha yes... motherbear does the washing and does many other things that I should be doing :red
She is worse with my brother!

My mother is what some people call a hardy personality, she doesn't like the hugs and kisses and doesn't get so emotional but I know there is a soft part inside her. She gets into so many arguments with the budgies, they yell back at her :))

I hope she loves the guinea pigs!

The washing bag looks like a great idea, I shall add this to my list thank you!

I'm going to go with the fleece idea, just cut smaller pieces and place them on top of a large fleece.

Thank you for telling me. Yes the scents will not be used, I cannot use them anyways as budgies would get ill from any fragancey things so it's all good for the guinea pigs happy living!
