I have two female guinea pigs. One is 2 the other 4. I noticed I heard them sneezing a lot more so I took them to the vet. The 2 year old one has early stages of a URI, while the 4 year old one is fine(which was surprising because I thought I heard her sneeze more). Vet gave me the antibiotics, I think its Bactrim(it doesn't say on the bottle but that's what he said). He also said to give the other one antibiotics in case she might get it and all. Said she should be fine when she comes in for her two week checkup. Said they were otherwise in very good shape and that what I'm doing is right. She seems fine. Moving around, eating a lot, her normal self. For those who have had guinea pigs who have URIs will it be likely that she should be good in two weeks after the medicine? It was in the early stages he said. I know he said she would, but things happen. Just so I have an idea. She is older, so stronger in general, never had any illnesses before.

Yes that sounds good, it doesn't sound like either of them had a pretty bad URI in the first place, so hopefully all things should be well when their course is finished. Considering it is quite subtle I would just keep an eye on them, but finish the course as prescribed.

It really should say what it is on the bottle, for legislation and for the safety of your animals. Bactrim or Baytril are the most prescribed antibiotic for such and works very well in most cases.

Sounds like you are doing everything fine, I would only suggest changing to daily weighing while on the course of antibiotics at least, as it is the best way to keep an eye on how your pigs are doing, aside from looking at them of course.

You’ve been given a good length course of antibiotics.

Definitely switch to daily weight checks so you can ensure they both continue to eat enough hay. Some antibiotics can, sometimes, suppress the appetite so those daily weight checks are important to enable you to step in if needed.

I hope they are both ok soon
