Hi I have aa 1-year-old boy guinea pig named Tucker and he's going in to be neutered in about 2 weeks I was just wondering if he'll still act the same after his surgery he's a sweetheart and I wouldn't want him to change LOL I read that male guinea pigs will still act the same it's only in other animals that their demeanor changes. Just want to know if that's true I have three females and I also wanted to know after the 3 weeks waiting period after he's neutered if I'd be able to put him in with the females?

Yeah our boy pepper did he’s even sweeter now he’s such a big loveable boy but he did get a bit chunkier even though the 4 females he’s with are all normal and slim x

But he will still do the deed with any females it really doesn’t change anything just can’t get pregnant x

6 weeks wait are needed after neutering to join his lady friends, we have forum members who have had unexpected pregnancies from boys even 5 weeks post neuter- it can and does happen- a full 6 weeks are needed to make absolutely sure!
But otherwise his behaviour should be completely unchanged, he will still flirt with the ladies and guard them and mate with them when they are in season and smell like a sexy boar and scent mark everything- the only change should be not making babies, I have 2 neutered boars and they are both real characters and both happily living with very satisfied lady pigs :)

Agreed with the above - our Harry is still a sweetheart! Annnnd still a bit of a pest where his ladies are concerned, sometimes :))

Just also to add that standard forum advice is to wait six weeks post op. I believe it's @Wiebke who had a litter born after a five week post-neuter boar wasn't quite as safe as thought!

Edit: Sorry, crossed posts!

Oh my God that's hilarious LOL lady pigs thank you so much I'll definitely keep them apart for 6 weeks don't want any more babies I have four right now don't want any more at the moment lol

Hi

I have adopted lots of neutered boars over the years and had a few neutered myself. It has not changed their personalities or behaviour.

The little surprise baby in my avatar picture on the left is the daughter of a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post-op boar (not one of my mine); just to provide a verifiable case and to show that it can really happen. When the testicles are removed, the tubes that carry the semen to the penis are not; the safety wait is there to make sure that there is no live semen left in them before a newly neutered boar can meet sows.
Here is our neutering information pack, which looks at all kinds of aspects around this issue from post-op care to a problem-free recovery with some videos: Neutered / De-sexed Boars And Neutering Operations: Myths, Facts and Post-op Care
