Hello all,

I picked up my rescue boy Wilbur 6 days ago, and he had been neutered a week before that. He’s now 2 weeks post op, his wound looks great, he’s moving around no problem and eating okay. The issue I have noticed is his stools are very soft and misshapen. I have also noticed several times that there are stools sitting in his rectum. The rescue centre believe he’s around a year old.

He’s doing well eating hay, less so on the nuggets. He’s been offered burgess excel which is what the rescue centre gave him and grain free science selective but he’s barely touched either. The rescue also gave me some pro-fibre too which I’m offering and he’s occasionally having a few of. I’m limiting his veg because I thought that would help his stools but I’m after some advice on the best thing to do!

Hi

Are you weighing him regularly and checking whether his weight is stable? Take him off any fresh veg until the poos have firmed up for at least 48 hours and then only slowly reintroduce veg again, starting with just a little fresh herbs and then adding one more variety with every passing meal if he is fine.
If necessary, supplement with recovery feed and extra probiotics like bene bac or fibreplex; and/or you can try poo soup (i.e. live healthy microbiome transfer). The scales will tell you how much when you weigh him first thing in the morning. Antibiotics or pain can wipe out the gut microbiome, which you want to restart again.

Thanks for your advice! His weight does appear to be fairly stable! He hasn’t eaten any fresh food in the last week, just hay, forage and occasionally some nuggets. His appetite is definitely not normal, but as he’s my first guinea pig who I’ve had neutered I don’t know how long they might still feel the side effects for? It’s now been two weeks since his op was done (he had his neutering done abdominal) and I’ve had him for a week.

I’ve already been giving him fibre supplements (pro-fibre) but he won’t eat them. Is there a more palatable fibre/pro biotic supplement that I could try?

Can you mix it into some mushed up pellets? That usually goes down.

You could try fibreplex, mix it in with a few soaked and mashed pellets, or Pro-C which you can sprinkle on his pellets. If you are still worried about him I would ring the rescue back and ask them for a vet check
Hope Wilbur is feeling better soon x

I’ll pick up some Pro-C tomorrow and try that! Thank you for the advice :) if his weight is stable should I be worried about how little he is eating?

Do you think he is eat8ng more when you are not around or through the night? If his poos are thin then it does suggest his tummy is not quite right though, although his weight is stable. I would ask for a vet check if you can

I don’t think so unfortunately, the nuggets are practically untouched; it’s a bit more difficult with the hay to tell as it gets all spread around everywhere!

Unfortunately the rescue has offered to take him to a vets for me but they’re a two hr round trip which is a bit of a challenge. I think it’ll be easier to take him to my local vets if he doesn’t improve with the pro-c over the next day or two!

His poos aren’t exactly thin, they’re just blobby and al mushed up. He absolutely stinks because it’s all in his feet and fur 🤢

yes, you may be best taking him locally, have a look on our Recommended Vet list in the Green Bar and ask them for a vet with piggie experience x
