Hey, I have been all over the net and couldn't find any answers... basically I bought a female guinea pig when she was about 2 months old.... a few weeks later we found that she had given birth to another female... so for a while it has all been goin well but sadly the daughter has been ill, the vet gave her anti-biotics and I am guessing it is that but they have started some REALLY intense bum sniffing. It is not really a pretty sight as they seem to really go at it. I was just wondering if I can stop this somehow because it is causing them to fight a bit aswell :(

thanks

guinea pigs will often groom each other, especially around their bums.
if one of your pigs is ill the healthy one may be trying to groom her if she can't do it herself. she may also be interested in the new smell your ill piggie will be producing.

Well that is all they seem to be going for, they did used to groom eachother round the ears but now, whenever they see eachother, they go straight to the bum. It only started about a week ago and the daughter is now about a year old so I doubt it is the new smell thing......

When were the antibiotics given? Has the course of treatment finished or is the daughter still ill? They can smell different for a while with illness, during and then just after treatment.

Well they are both sniffing eachothers bums so it is not just the mother. The anti-biotics were given about a week and a half ago and the bum sniffing (on both parts) started about 2-3 days after. I think the daughter is ok now, she was just urinating a bit of blood which the vet said it may have been an infection and since the anti-biotics were given, there has been no blood.

bum sniffing is something guinea do to try and figure out if the other guinea is a friend or not, so double checking that they know the other, it could be more intense now if the daughter had been to the vet so may smell of that or just still smell a little "off" also how old is the daughter?

they daughter is about 10 months but she also has a go at her mother with the intense bum sniffing :S
