Hey guys so my guinea pig has recently recovered from a respiratory infection roughly about 4 weeks ago now. He was absolutely fine last night but this morning I’ve noticed his eyes are watering & they’re a bit crusty. Other than that he seems fine in himself. He’s eating and drinking. What do you guys think it might be? Could it be allergies?

Please do have your piggy seen by a vet. There are a few things which can cause watery eyes but a vet needs to carry out a hands on check to find out which one it is.

My girl has a watery crispy eye. She's seeing a vet for treatment, but at home as a precautionary measure I am removing any allergens / spices of dust. Defo take them to a bet to be safe.

Hi!

Please see a vet promptly.

It could be an eye injury (hay poke) or something stuck under the lid. Eye injuries can deteriorate very quickly; this is why they are generally prioritised here in the UK and seen by a vet as soon as they can be fit in. The sooner treatment can kick in, the easier and quicker recovery.

Watery fluid and a translucent crust are always a sign of irritation/pain in the eye. Eye cleaning fluid is milky. URI crusts are thick yellow/organce/green mucus that glues the eye shut.

Thank you! I do have left over anti inflammatory medication from the vets 4 weeks ago. I was told by the vet that if anything like this happened I was to give it to him. Do you think that will be okay?

Hi!

Please don't treat on spec but you can ask your vet during the consultation talk whether they think that a painkiller is needed.

Just wanted to add that Bibble passed away today. It turned out to be cancer in the end. I am so heart broken, thank you for all the advise
