Last night we had to clean hay out of nuggets eye that had got itself stuck there ๐Ÿ™„ her eye looked OK but was watery this morning so she's had a quick trip to the vets for her eyes checked, thankfully all OK they just think she irritated it. They very kindly checked all the trio since her friends went along for the ride and found some green mucous in marshmallows eye ๐Ÿ™„ thankfully she seems healthy so they aren't concerned about that either. Just got to keep an eye on them both ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ mal is totally fine no complaints from her ๐Ÿ˜‚
Feel bad because the vets had no appointments and saw us anyway but relieved pigwigs are OK and very thankful theyve been checked ๐Ÿ˜
Now of course daddy pig had to buy them treats on the way home ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚

Unlimited hay is the main food source (about 80% of the daily food intake) and piggies also like to play, burrow and sleep in it... so issues are bound to happen. It is great that your vet is prepared to take potential eye injuries seriously because the sooner they are seen and treated, the better since they can deteriorate very quickly.

Please make sure that you serve any stalky, scratchy hay rather in a rack and use any soft, ideally dust extract hay for any enrichment and activity on the ground. Providing different hay varieties also counts as enrichment.

But glad for you that there are no serious issues.

Thankyou, it was thankfully soft Orchard hay shed got in there (expensive but they eat so much of it and it's soft enough to not cause injury) which is why I think we managed to avoid any issues! The stalky timothy and the oat thankfully were avoided with piggy eyes! Shes had hay poke previously that required drops I've been cautious with eyes ever since :) they said the same thing about eyes and needing to check it to make sure I'm glad they saw her just for piece of mind! they said if it swells or anything to go back but hopefully she should be ok :)

They just charge in with no sense of hay being sharp or abrasive! Throw caution the the wind! We've luckily not had a lot of eye injuries (though Leela came home with an eye infection and needed antibiotic drops as a tiny baby), but the way Hadley charges head-first into hay piles it's a miracle she hasn't done herself any damange!
