I love talking about my guinea pigs and so many people are like ew you have a rodent as a pet like yes I do and I am proud and if you don’t like it then go but I’m wondering why so many people don’t like guinea pigs

Guinea pigs get a raw deal .seen as childrens starter pets, which simply is not the case.

I would talk to people you know love guinea pigs and on the forum.
Try not to listen to negativity.
Have you any pictures of your guinea pigs ?

I always had a thing about guinea pigs but got my first ones 2 years ago as a surprise present. I'll be honest, I thought it would be like having big hamsters, I was so wrong. Being an obsessive personality type obviously I researched how to give them the best life possible by every available source. Right away when my boys were pups I could already tell that they had completely individual and opposite personalities.
People in general don't realise how reactive and entertaining they can be, especially when they are living a comfortable life and get to demonstrate pleasure. I personally have had visitors who are surprised (and usually delighted) by the way they seem to be getting summoned into the pig room to be introduced and pay homage in the form of treats. In the case of someone familiar, usually "auntie" as soon as they hear her voice, the BIG wheeks are unleashed until she says hello and pets them.
Anyway, we are all rather besotted with our little furry overlords here, many of us have personal threads about our own piggies and there are some fun ones too like Feet out Friday, Boars Galore, and Hide and Seek, so have a good browse and enjoy the forum.

It's the children's pet thing as other's have said. I get some funny looks being a pensioner when I say I have guinea pigs. Some people seem interested and want to know more, most think I'm mad to be so devoted to a children's pet .

Some people think it's weird that I spend so much on vet bills and give daily meds to a small pet, or even consider surgery.

I bet vast majority of people who say that never held one of these beautiful creatures in their arms.
If they knew they do have distinct personalities like a dog or cat many of them would have a Change of heart.
I agree, guinea pigs are actually precious, if you asked me 4 years ago I would have said they are rodents of course they aren’t good pets but now if you asked I would say they are very good pets and they are cute but they only downside is they live too short of lives

Yea, mine are so friendly especially when they get to know people and I have only met 1 person who doesn’t like them after getting to know them, but most people think they are cool after meeting them

I mean I honestly don’t see why they are viewed as a children’s pet because I think they do better with adults handling them because children are obnoxious and loud and guinea pigs don’t like that

The thing is that I think regardless of what pet you have you should do that and people finding it weird are silly, and guinea pigs are so precious and I don’t know who you would be ok not helping them

In North America especially, I think people think that guinea pigs are disposable pets for kids. The idea that an adult has guinea pigs and gets them vet care and does all the stuff you would do for a dog or cat really baffles people.

I actually think rodents are great pets... right now I have guinea pigs and hamsters, in the past I've had mice and hedgehogs (not a rodent, but a small animal.) The only downside to rodents is that they don't live as long as many larger pets.

I don’t get why people are like that because I think they do better with adults caring for them and also a nice thing about them is they don’t need as much space as a cat for instance because guinea pigs have everything they need in the cage (not food bags or hay bags but you know what I mean)
