Whitish Discharge From The Rear End

Hi there

I am back again for your wonderful advice. Last time I was here you guys basically helped me save my piggie's life. Three vets later I suggested a diagnosis which turned out to be right (bacterial enteritis). The hand feeding tips were invaluable as this made her last till finally we had a diagnosis and a cure.

18 months later here I am again with the same piggie who is now 5.5 years old. I have noticed today a withish discharge from her rear. I wiped it with tissue and the flesh seems normal underneath (no redness). Is such a discharge normal? Should I see the vet? Tomorrow we are off for our annual leave and the pigs are going to a friend who knows little about them so this afternoon is my last chance if needed. A quick reply would help me greatly!

it could be normal secretions but if any doubt, see your exotics/cavy-savvy vet

if you type it in on google, alot of posts come up from this forum. it seems a quicker way to find any previous threads i've found. perhaps do that and see if any sound similar

Hi though I have seen this on sows , l have no idea what the problem is , and after a quick Google serch apparently not many GP keepers know
Other than it is probably hormonal and it could be a prelude to some other conDitton . If she were my pig l would definitely seek professional advice ,
Safest bet is to run it past your vet

First thought , she is going through the menapours , though she is a bit old for that
Is there any chance she is pregnant ?

I know some keeper say GPS do not have a estegen cycle , and mentrate in the way other breastfeedng animals do?
Why not ?

Is it coming from her vagina? If so, sounds like maybe urine scald. My girl had a white discharge coming from her vagina and it was due to her bum being wet and getting urine scalded. My vet prescribed surolan. There might and probably is a better medication than this as surolan can thin the skin. But it worked a treat. Also make sure she's always dry down there and change beds frequently. she may have arthritis in her hind legs causing her not to lift herself up when she pees. Obviously this is just a possibility, Deffo make an appt with your vet! Good luck! x

A white discharge in sows can happen, but if in doubt, and especially if there is fair amount or it is more than a one-off, please see a piggy savvy vet. Make sure that he has a look at her womb, which can go wrong in older sows.

I think it is... from her vagina.... I seem very stupid now.... .
The arthritis is definitely a possibility as I found she was rather wet on the underside lately. They are getting on and a bit like old mamas now, not as energetic as they used to be although they can still do their party trick :run across the room and jump in the cage alone when they are brought back from outside in the evening. I missed the vet opportunity today as it is too late now (I am in the Uk) but will tell my friend to keep adding dry bedding under her when I am away. Will review when I come back, She does not seem in pain, eating well and stuff....

Please keep her as dry as you can by changing the bedding in the sleeping are frequently and giving her regular bum washes with hand warm water and careful drying afterwards for preventing urine scald. See your vet about the arthritis anyway. if the discharge dries a powdery white, then it is excess calcium and a natural process.

Hi there , at 5 years of age , she is just about middle age,
Possably the best way to keep her bum dry is to use vet bed as a cage liner
I use it in all my cages , it wicks the water to its Base and into the news paper I put underneath .

It may cost a little more , but it will save you time and money in the long term ,

Hi just just looking through my records on the pig that l had with this problem
and I need to add , this is not going to get any better with over the counter medicine
