Hi. I hope someone can help. My Guinea pig, Sammy, has a white mark in his eye. I know Guinea pigs can suffer cataracts and glaucoma so I was wondering if what I am seeing is the onset of either. Enclosed is a photo of his eye. Any help in identifying this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. 20200524_125416.jpg

No idea. But I would get him seen by the vet. Eyes can deteriorate very quickly.

Hi!

Glaucoma is increased pressure inside the eye (making it bulge out) but it doesn't cause any marks inside the eye.

This doesn't look like a normal cataract to me. Do you have rabbits, too?

Is this the beginning of osseous metaplasia: Links - Eye Conditions - Guinea Lynx Records

No, nor of osseous choristema.

Could you please answer my previous question whether your guinea pigs are in contact with rabbits? It is important.

You will need to see a vet for a closer examination anyway as we can only make educated guesses and cannot replace a vet.

No, he is not in contact with rabbits. Thanks.

Did you manage to get a vet appointment?

In this case, a cataract may be the most likely option even if it is no looking like any of the fair number I have seen in my own piggies.
But it is in this case not caused by e.cuniculi, which would have responded more to the tunnelling look (a rare complication).

However, all we can do is guess from your picture. Please accept that diagnosing is very often not like a textbook 'snap your your finger' classic symptom cluster, but it is more like a crime story - examining the often messed up scene of a murder and trying to rule out as many potential suspects as possible. And unlike a vet, we cannot handle a piggy and have a closer look or feel from different angles - nor are we qualified to.

One have mine has developed the same. Been to see one vet and going to see another as they weren't sure what to do. She's got water eyes but not consistently but no signs of infection. Apart from the overly wet eye occasionally, she shows no ill effects.

This is a thread from May. It would be better for you to start your own thread and explain what you’ve done so far if you want some help.
