Hello Everyone,

My guinea pig has been experiencing white eye discharge that he doesn't seem to clean when it happens and it causes him to shut his eye when it happens. It seems to be making him uncomfortable. I have took him to the vet and everything checked out to be in good health but the eye discharge does happen randomly and the doctor was unable to see it.

Symptoms
  • Eye booger that he doesn’t clean and forms a crust around his eye
  • hard to bring him in when this happens because it happens randomly almost every day
  • it does go away somehow but it looks like it’s bothering him and we are worried it might be a sign of some type of infection because we don’t see him clean it while our other guinea pig cleans his eyes easily
  • He also squeals very loudly randomly(not sure if this is related to being in pain or him wanting something)

Is this Normal? We will be taking him to the vet again regardless.

Milky white eye discharge is usually their normal cleaning fluid. If that is what it is, then it is not of concern. Sometimes piggies don’t always clean it all away properly.

Any other eye watering or not opening their eye properly is a sign of irritation and does need a vet check.

Guinea pig body quirks - What is normal and what not?

Randomly squealing - not something we can comment on since that is likely contextual. Loud squealing can be submission squealing ie a submissive piggy will squeal to tell their dominant cagemate that they know they are in charge.

Hi and welcome

Could the tear duct be occasionally blocked?

If it is gunky stuff, then this is pointing towards an infection.
Please try to take a preferably clear picture the next time it happens and upload it via the Attach Files button underneath your post when you write it. Right now we can only guess based on your speculations.
