Hello when feeding my piggys this morning one of them has a slight whistling when sniffing. I was just wondering if this is common or should i visit the vet? thanks

Unlike humans, guinea pigs can only breathe through their noses, so you are most likely hearing a partially or fully blocked nose when they are eating. See a vet tomorrow if the whistling/hooting/crackling is not disappearing, i.e. the nose has not cleared, in case it is the beginning of a respiratory tract infection (URI). Sooner if you notice loss of appetite, apathy, crackly or deep breathing from the chest, crusty eyes and nose (yellowish) or regular coughing.

Thanks for your replys it's the first time I've ever heard her do it and she seemed to just do it when I was handing her veggies. I will see if she does it later also and if she does I'll book her in :) it's easy to get into our vets. I have kept an eye on her all day and she seems normal running around like her normal self I can't hear any nosies from her now. I remember when we first got piggys and they had uri they seemed very ill.

You can hold your ear against the chest and head to see whether the noise is just coming from the nose or from deeper in the body. If in any doubt, please see a vet tomorrow. URI is indeed a serious illness that can kill.

I'm not sure what you mean I have her on my lap I've just held her upto my ear and all I can hear is her heartbeat. I know how serious it is that's why I asked on here as soon as I heard it.

Also she has no other signs her eyes and nose haven't got any crusting around them and she eats a lot haha :p

If you can only hear her heart when you hold her chest to your ear, then it means that there is no infection in the lungs and lower respiratory organs; you couldn't miss the crackling if there was! ;)

Hopefully, the whistling will be gone by this evening.

It is always better to be cautious rather than the other way. We are here to help you figure things out. Keep an eye on her, as always when you have worries and see the vet if it is not gone by tonight or if there is a deterioration. But from what you have been telling, it is definitely not an emergency right now.
