There's a chance that I could be taking on some Guinea Pigs in about a month's time and I'd like to get a hutch for them but there's such a bewildering range of choices that I have no idea where to start.

Should I get a one or a two storey hutch and a separate run or should I get a hutch with a built in run?

Where would you recommend I looked that is both reasonable in quality and budget friendly?

Thanks,

I wouldn't recommend a hutch at all, I find them hard to clean and the animals in them feel hidden.

I think sheds and playhouses are loads better.

Most of my pets lived in hutches but I didn't like it so now non of them do :)

If you would like to keep the piggies inside I think C&C cages are good and they are loads cheaper than a hutch. Midwest cages are similar and super cheap. I wouldn't recommend most pet store cages because they are way too small.

Mine live in a Living World cage in my bedroom and I love it :)

We have a ferplast 120 for indoors and a summerhouse cage 5ft from rabbit hutch company for outside

I'm probably being really silly but what does C&C actually mean? I've seen it written a couple of times on this forum.

think its "cube & correx"

basically (30cm'ish) square mesh grids that you can make to your own design, with correx (big plastic sheets like house "for sale boards") on the bottom to make the flooring waterproof.

Hi there,

I do understand it can be hard to make a choice about housing. Firstly, it depends on if you are able to keep them indoors, in which case, cage or C&C are great. If you have other pets then C&C may not be for you. Essentially C&C is metal grids of the same size which is fixed together and can be moved around to suit the area you have and then it is lined with a hard flexible plastic cut to size.

However, if you need to definitely house your piggies outdoors then hutch in a shed is good. Hutches do have their places in the piggy world, again it's down to personal preference, finance, ability etc. I would consider the cost of the hutch covers (insulator & waterproof cover), plus heat pads, water bottle covers. Also hutches can be low down so its worth considering if you are okay bending down to clean them out or have the hutch on a suitable higher surface. I got my hutches from Home to Roost. They have a sale on at the moment also. Not all hutches are the same, some are inferior quality i.e. the mesh is too thin and the latches are not secure. You don't want anything less than 4ft in length for two pigs. Lino for hutches will extend the life of the hutch along with the exterior cover. If you have a double hutch with a ramp, it might be worth considering some adaption of the ramp as often they are too steep.

I hope that helps.
