Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm getting trays to grow grass in for the pigs and I was wondering if there's any grass seeds I should avoid? I'm in B&M and they have about 10 different types but are all suitable for the pigs to munch on?

:D I can't say for certain, but I would think that all grass types are safe for piggies. Maybe wheat grass is one to avoid as I know you can't use wheat straw with piggies.

:D I've just thought of this; I would check that the seeds haven''t been treated with some growth treatment or something, as this will come out in the blades. Could be bad for pigs.

(I bought one of those grass seed trays from Zooplus, but it didn't grow! )

I would be interested in answers to this too. I have recently become a (small scale!) gardener for the first time ever after making "Fudges garden." And i have no clue what to add to it, on or around the grass, and what to feed it etc keeping it all safe for piggies.. Not my forte! Also fudge is single handedly keeping it all short.. Even the edges! So need to give it a wee boost.

I have seen people making wheatgrass trays online for their piggies but not sure about the ins and outs of that.

Following this cos i have the same dilema ! My zooplus tray grew really well but the second lot has failed...

I just bought a cheap box of general purpose grass seed in Wilko to reseed the bare patches in the lawn so now you've got me thinking! This one contains a mix of types but mostly rye grass. I've grown grass in trays in the greenhouse and not thought about the grass types to be honest. This years was a disaster, Abigale damaged the roof of the greenhouse everything got soaked in the subsequent storms and the grass went mouldy and had to be thrown away.

I recently made my first "piggy patch". I purchased my seeds from a farm shop that sells pasture grass mixes. From the sales person there, I understood that seeds for lawns may be treated and not safe for grazing animals. I bought:

- Orchard grass - dactylis glomerata
- Timothy grass - phleum pratense
- Blue grass - poa pratensis
- I also planted some non-grass plants: chamomile, dandelions and vetch.

Pigs can also have bermuda grass, fescue, oat grass, wheat grass and rye grass, but I thought that these three grass types would be sufficient. This isn't really an exclusive list of what grasses pigs can eat, just what I personally had considered planting.
