At the moment I do not have any piggies, and me getting piggies is not a definite but I want to be prepared!

I am hoping I can get 2 sows. They will be living in an insulated shed with snugglesafes for winter and they will be coming inside when it is very hot/cold. I cannot change this as I am renting a house so have to abide by landlord rules. I am unsure of the exact space I will be able to have in the shed currently.

I am looking at either the ferplast 120 or a 2 storey 100cm cage. I am also hoping to create some sort of pen so they can have a bit more space. They will have daily floor time as well. Which of these would be better? I know 120cm is minimum but with the 100cm 2 storey I would dedicate one level to play/zoomies and the other to bed/food. The way I look at it, a 120cm cage would not give 120cm of zoomie space as beds/food would take up room (not sure if that makes sense!).

I also have the added dilemma of being a student, so do not have much money to spend £100s on a cage and I also need a cage that I can easily move when I go home for the holidays etc. Because of this, I am not sure a C and C cage would be possible.

Obviously I will try and go as big as I can once I know how much space I actually have but for the moment these look like the most likely options

I wouldn’t advise the 2 storey as they very rarely use the 2 stories. You would be better with the 120” cage or look at zooplus website for the 140” or 160” cage.

Unfortunately a two storey cage does not count as extra space...it’s only the single level of floor space, not the upstairs, which counts so a 100cm cage is far too small. A 120cm base size is an bare minimum whether that be a single or double storey. A single storey is best though for those cages.
My pigs live in my shed year round in a two storey five foot hutch with an attached 5ft square pen inside the shed. The problem I have with keeping my boys in the shed comes from the heat rather than the cold. I find that once it gets to about 18/20 degrees outside, then the shed accumulates too much heat and quickly ends up being 25 degrees or moe and they have to be removed from the shed and into the outdoor run.

To add, I have an additional c&c 6x3 playpen which my boys come to play inside the house, but also as an indoor cage if necessary. I have it secured with cable ties permanently and then just add in the connectors when the pen is in use, as it folds flat on the cable ties and storage is so easy. I have a plastic sheet (Rather than a correx base) for this pen so it can also be folded flat.

would you be able to have a C&C cage but have a travel cage/transporter for when your moving? Since C&C cages are so easy to collapse down that would be pretty helpful when moving x
in regards to which cage otherwise, a 2 story cage's floor space doesn't include any upper levels, so your looking at their minimum space being classed as 100cm which as you've said is below the minimum 120cm, regardless of extra space from upper levels. I know what you mean for a 2 story cage being ideal as they can have two separate areas, one for food and bed and the other as ground space, that sounds good, but you'll still run into the issue that technically its below the min space.

The thing that concerns me about a c and c cage is the time it takes to set up/down. I sometimes go home for just a weekend (journey time is just over an hour so hopefully this wouldn't be too stressful for pigs). I have heard things about the connectors being difficult to put together etc. This would be the same if I had to bring them indoors if it was getting too hot in the day/cold at night, I wouldn't want to spend ages trying to put a cage together! I like the look of the ferplast 120 as I am pretty sure it flat packs which would be ideal. I am hoping I might be able to squeeze the 140 in which would be even better.

I also have cats so would definitely need one a cage with a lid, which again I guess would add to the time taken to put up/down?

Thank you for all your answers! It looks like the 2 storey is not really an option then.

A hutch could be an option but then I might be looking at 2 cages so I can have one to take them home which is an extra expense. They will be spending a more time at uni but also quite a lot of time at home when I factor in my holidays.

This setup will be a temporary thing until I finish uni in a year and a half, at which point they will be able to have a much bigger setup

I set up my c&c indoor playpen - open it out and put the connectors in - within five minutes.
