Which bedding is the best ? This is my first poll so I'm not sure how well it will work but hey :)
I am interested to find out which bedding u guys think is best :) I'm happy to spot clean once a day (maybe twice ) .
I don't really want something too expensive and they are long haired boars so I don't really want anything that will give them tangles.
They live outside as well, thanks !

I get fleece cage liners made because I would probably sever a finger if I tried to sew anything myself.

But hands down, they are the best investment for both you and your piggies and you will not regret it. Fleece comes in so many cute patters, it's comfy for your guinea pigs, it keeps them dry, it's re-usable, and you don't risk your guinea pigs developing URI's like they can with some other beddings. The initial outlay to purchase liners is expensive, but you save money in the long run by not having to purchase bedding every week. And cage liners take about 3.53663 seconds to change out so are so so quick and easy on cage cleaning day ;)

It takes a little more maintenance than traditional bedding types (eg. spot cleaning 1-3 times a day depending on the size of your cage), but it's totally worth it.

I use vet bed which was not listed on your poll so had to choose other. I think there are many vetbed users on this forum so you might like to add that as a category.

I use fleece and vetbed with incontinence bed pads underneath. They have their hay in correx hay kitchens and fleecy hay bags.

Thanks everyone, I'm thinking of getting some fleece and maybe vet bed though its quite expensive. I'm not sure how to add another option but ill try :)

I checked other, I would use woodshavings, megazorb, hemp, hay and paper anything really :-) I just found fleece was not actually cost or time effective vs shavings for example.

I have tried fleece in the past as well and always gone back to wood shavings, fleece just doesn't work for me but others love it so it's worth a try. I like wood shavings but recently one of my pigs died suddenly from what I suspect was a URI and it has left me paranoid about dust and allergies caused by shavings. (I doubt it was the shavings but I'm still worried about it) So today I am ordering 'fitch' bedding. It's a recycled paper bedding for horses but small animals too and a lot of people on here praise it so I'm giving it a go. It's similar to carefresh but better I think (less dust, better smell etc.)

i use finacard in my litter trays topped with hay.Fleece everywhere else

I also use fitch, I used to use wood shavings with hay on top but the smell was quite bad and expensive, Fitch is brilliant! No smell, absorps wee a treat and makes spot cleaning a dream :)

I personally hated fleece, as did my pigs. I really wanted to like it too, it looks the nicest (along with vetbed)

How long do you leave it until it starts to get smelly? Like how many days can you go until it's time to clean them out?

I am using fleece with my new boys. It is just a large cheapie fleece blanket with newspaper underneath to catch the pee. I'm spot checking for poo as I'm home all day with my LO :)

I use fleece, mattress protectors and puppy pads in the main cage then Papelit paper bedding in the litter trays.

Vetbed with a good layering if newspaper underneath and a newspaper lined hay tray. Spot clean once a day, hay tray fully emptied every other day and fully cleaned with fresh vetbed in once a week.

It sounds expensive but I've found it's cheaper than buying bedding in the long run. And it's much tidier/cleaner too!

I also use vetbed with newspaper underneath , piggies love it and its so easy to keep clean

I've only left it a week so far and I've not noticed a smell by that point, with spot cleaning of poo and wee patches I'd say it could last 10 days with no smell :)

I've used fleece in the past and I've never really like it as I'm still at school and I'm out a lot! My fave substrate that I've used is this...
Newspaper
Wood shavings ( a thin layer)
Then loads and loads of hay!
I found this out the other day but my boys love to dig! So I put mounds of hay in their bed and on top of the shavings to keep the dust down ( even though I buy dust extracted)

This is my personal opinion

x

Oh and I agree with @gwinnypiggylove about the Fitch. I've looked at it before but never bought any. I may reconsider it as it is a great bedding!
