Hi, I am getting slightly confused which bedding I should use. I haven't bought my little piggies yet but the cage I am looking at is this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LARGE-RAB...pplies_Small_Animals&var=&hash=item5af250dd39

I believe the bottom has no bottom so should go straight onto grass so they can graze? Should I put hay down there too? Or just their tunnels and litter tray etc. Also in their snug area do I put newspaper, then vet bed then hay or just hay?

Also would they use the ramp or do they prefer one level?

I just want to make sure I get it right, thank you

bumping for you!

Its a little cold for them to be outside on the grass this time of year, perhaps you could tell us a little more like when your piggies will be joining you and where abouts their hutch is going to be?

For the inside bit i would highly recommend Fitch bedding (nice and easy to Google) it is lovely and warm like snuggling into tissues, but it is also very absorbent and i find it works really well :)

I am thinking in a few weeks, I am trying to find hutches that have a solid bottom. When it's warm they will be outside then in colder months in the garage (not used for a car). Thanks for your advice

I would advise that if you havnt purchased yet definately better for piggies to be in a bigger solid hutch, but some people do use hutches like that sucessfully, maybe have a look out our members hutches thread which is right up at the top of the housing section in the forum for ideas :) (and also welcome to the forum!)

I would second this Fitch bedding is one of the best I've used and it makes hardly any mess at all and the odor control is fab as well as it being nice and soft!

If you have somewhere to store it you can buy in bulk so it can being very cost effective! :tu:

Thanks, do you use woodshavings, I think that's what it looked like in pets at home, but I have heard its bad for their feet. What do I put in the litter tray? Sorry for all the questions!

How much Fitch bedding do you go through a week? I have 2 cages. Wondering how much I would have to order.

I buy one bale, have a cage just over 120x60 and it does me 5/6 clean outs, and I'm not sparce with it i fill it deep. So i guess it depends how big your cage is!

I tend to avoid wood shavings, as it makes my piggies sneeze and gets all caught up in their hair! but some people do use these without any problems :)

Not everyone bothers with a litter tray for piggies as they probably wont use it, but if your going to try the best thing to do is fill it with the same bedding as everywhere else (nice and absorbant) and place it right underneath their hay as piggies tend to wee and poo the most while eating :)

We dont mind questions dont worry!

At moment i have 4 120x60 cages as I'm waiting to neuter my boar and each bale lasts me 3 weeks so if you only have one cage that's gonna last for a good number or clean outs.

I have six piggies and i keep them in pairs which is why i have so many cages...

My 2 piggies are on newspapers, towel and fleece in the main hutch areas but in they are on newspaper, fitch and hay in the bedroom and under the log hidey. I change these areas every 3 days, a 20kg bag of fitch lasts me a good 6-8 weeks.

I use wood shavings which many criticise because of breathing issues ( I have never heard of it being bad for feet ) but I have never had the slightest problem and I love the smell. I did have a kitten litter tray with bio catolet (which I use for my rats bedding) and would recommend it for that sort of thing. I took the litter tray out though because it used up space and they didn't take to litter training. I would say a litter tray is better used with fleece to keep the hay away from it. fitch sounds pretty good but I am yet to try it.

Fitch lasted me about 8 weeks with two piggy cage 1 bunny hutch and the many many hams :)
