Hi everyone, Iv just joined the forum today 😊 I’m looking for some advice on keeping my guinea pigs in our shed. Today I cleaned out the shed as I was planning on keeping them in there with a hutch & free roam. The thing is I noticed there’s a lot of damp on the roof & in various places. There was also a corner with woodlouse & quite a lot of spiders which I removed. I got rid of all cobwebs etc. I’m now worried that with damp & insects it will harm them. I thought that the she’s would be warmer than outside & plan to out a heater in also. We haven’t yet picked up the pigs which we will do later. I have a hutch that will be inside & x2 very large huts that I planned to put in the shed. I just don’t know if the damp will harm them but surely a damp shed is better than outside. Also would the insects harm them at all? Any advice from owners would be very appreciated. Thank you for taking time to read

:wel: to the forum . I wouldn't worry too much about spiders …. and I agree a damp shed is better than outside . You say you are planning to get heater in the shed … does that mean you have electricity ?

Have you seen this thread ?

Hi thank you for replying & for the welcome😊 I thought the same, better that than outside. They are both inside just now for a good while. I may just keep them in we will see. I need to make another thread because I think one of them is sick with a uri! We have only had them 2 days from the pet shop but this girls is a lot thinner than the other. It has fluffy hair so you don’t notice until you pet her. Tonight I thought I heard her snoring but realised this wasn’t the case & that she is making s strange sound while breathing. Her sides are noticeably moving up & down rapidly when she breathes & she has been so scared & timid since she came home. Much more than the other. Iv never had a guinea pig with this before but it’s definitely not normal. I’m phoned g the pet shop tomo & if they can’t gekp I need to take her to the vets. I looked up online & watched videos & it all points to an uri! Poor darling. I will post a video of the breathing couldn’t really get the sound she was making x

Hi there- my 6 pigs are in a shed & I've no electricity but I have managed to get on top of any condensation and damp by using an electric heater (on an extension) and using dehumidifier boxes (you can buy those online). You are in a much better position already having electricity there so I would just dry it out before they start living in there, heat will do that and then you can just keep on top of it- it wont take long to dry out. Ventilation is important so I have the window slightly open in the day too.

As long as you can keep it dry and draught free they'll be fine. I dont have heat on at night but stuff hideys with hay & snuggle safe heat pads if its very cold.

Hope that helps!

Hi darcey, thank you for replying & your advice. It’s good to hear they should be ok in there. I have snuggle safer heat pads also & would put in plenty of snuggly hideaways. Iv only had them 2 days so I’m going to keep them inside for now. Think once the better weather comes in the roof will dry out as it’s not long been redone x
