Hi,

I was wondering where to get my piggies? There are no rescues near me, at least that's what I've encountered during my rescue hunt. I know this forum is a non breeding forum, but I honestly don't know where to get them and I don't want to get them from a pet store. Please help me!

You can get them from wherever you wish to :) The ethos of the forum is pro rescue but we understand that finding rescues, particularly in North America is a bit hit and miss.

I've done a quick Google and found this site: http://smallanimalrescue.org/

They're in BC, but I know it's a huge place in itself.

Again, finding rescues in North America can be tricky, so everyone understands if it's not possible to get hold of or find any rescues nearby.

I don't know whether this rescue is still up and running as the website won't load on my computer, but I thought I'd post it below just in case you were interested. They may be too far from you anyway but it could be worth emailing them?

I also found this - http://www.spca.bc.ca/pet-care/adoption/#.U99Toq1dXCZ and this website has a bit more information about adoption of guinea pigs in Canada: http://vancouver.ca/home-property-development/adopting-pets.aspx

Really, as Falken said, it's your choice where you get your guinea pigs from and all we can do is advise you as to where rescues are, if you wish to adopt guinea pigs. But as said before, rescues in Canada are usually few and far between.

I hope this has helped and good luck in finding some piggies!

I got mine from a 2nd hand website we have in the uk called gumtree. However If you decide to do this then you would have to be prepared in case of any vets bills. I was lucky and mine were ok.

If really is up to you where you get your piggies from if there aren't any available to rescue then you may have to visit a pet store. Good luck in your search. ;)

If you cannot get to a recommended good standard rescue with quarantine, medical treatment and a pregnancy watch, then it is unfortunately more difficult.

You can try to find more local shelters via petfinder for the US and Canada, but these shelters are not necessarily piggy savvy or will provide medical care. Free-ads places like Craigslist for the US mean that all the risks and responsibilites re. health, bonds or potential pregnancies are on your side.

Finding a good breeder is equally difficult; the few really good and caring ones are usually very careful who they rehome to (generally not to piggy newbies they don't know and trust) and they do not tend to advertise. The majority is out to make money and not into animal welfare. Unfortunately, anybody can call themselves a breeder as well as a rescue. :(

Here is the list of good standard piggy savvy rescues for your state from Guinea Lynx website, which we have permission to share: http://www.guinealynx.info/rescue_organizations_canada.html

Unfortunately, the Little Mischief Rescue has not been updated, only a LONG time ago, in 2011 or 2012. I've been checking Petfinder, but I would appreciate an already bonded pair. Still having trouble finding the best place to get piggies!
