Just got a Guinea Pig from my local shelter, and I want to get a second one but they don't have anymore. There are no rescues or shelters even somewhat close with Guinea pigs, none on craigslist either. Only option I have is Petco, i know Petco's reputation and I'm scared to get one from them but I have no other choice at the moment. I dont want my Guinea pig to be on his own for to long, is buying from Petco okay? I dont really want to support them but it's my only option.

Having a friend for your piggy is more important than where you get it. There is a list of rescues at the top of the page. If it has to be Petco, then so be it. Just be careful that you double check the sex, and have a period of quarantine to prevent any possible illness, mites or fungal infection passing to your current piggy. I got two of mine from the rescue section of pets at home, and they are wonderful wee guys, and no illnesses etc. Good luck x

How long should that period be? Never done anything like this before.

I think the recommended quarantine is 2 weeks. I kept Bobby and Bailey in a cage in my kitchen during that time. Always handle and clean your current piggy first to avoid carrying anything on your hands or clothes.

Agree that the needs of your current piggy outweigh where you should get them a friend from! It's a shame there are no rescues local to you where perhaps they might have been able to help you and your piggy pick out a friend. A good rescue will make sure all their piggies are correctly sexed and free from illness (and if girls - not pregnant!). Have you checked out the Rescue Locator at the top of this page; there might be somewhere you could try, although I'm not sure of your location. You can add this by clicking on your name, then account details and you will see 'Location' listed. Your location will then appear on every post you make, and it will help us all to give you relevant advice as we have members in many different countries ;)

Going back to your current situation, here's a link that should be very helpful for you and will provide lots of answers to your questions. There are many different links, within this link! I hope it helps you, but please feel free to come back and ask any more questions if you need to.
