Hello, does anyone know where science select recovery (or critical care) can be purchased? my guinea pig has been off baytril for over 24 hours now because even at a very low dose, it was messing up her poops a little, and it wasn't working anyway. now that the poops are looking improved, i would like to start her on the other antibiotic, doxycycline, but am terrified about total appetite loss/gut stasis. i am leaving tomorrow for a trip (about a week) and they are coming with us in the car. if i start her on doxy and she stops eating, i dont currently have anything i can give her. but if i do not start the doxy soon, I'm worried her URI might progress. the vets are closed this weekend, so i cant ask their advice. I also can't order it, since we are leaving. I'm calling the vet tomorrow to ask what i should do. where does everyone here ordinarily get this stuff from? Vet offices? Pet stores? I haven't seen any evidence that pet stores sell this stuff, but i also am not likely to be able pick up anything up from a vet until after we arrive at our destination tomorrow, and that could be a huge delay, assuming they even carry it. If I can't find it today, then I have no choice but to wait and call the vet tomorrow morning when they open and ask them what I should do.

Amazon.
You can use normal pellets mushed up with warm water as a replacement for proper recovery feeds.
Its also advisable to give probiotics to any piggy on antibiotics. antibiotics kill off the good gut bacteria as well as the bad so the probiotics can help replace the gut good bacteria and help to keep their digestive system even. BeneBac is the one I believe most commonly used in the US. It can also be bought from Amazon, pet shops etc

I would order from Amazon, but we are taking off in less than 24 hours and it wouldn't get here in time. I guess ill have to take my chances and wait.

How effective is mushing up pellets? Does it have the same nutritional content as the recovery care? How often amd how much would she need?

I actually do have a probiotic, but I have my doubts about its efficacy on her. I don't have a scale though, and I'm not entirely sure we will be able to find one where we are going. Maybe if they have a Wal-Mart or something.

Does your piggy have a healthy companion? If so, you can make "poop soup" and syringe it to your sick pig. It mimics natural behaviour of a sick guinea.

Yes, although that might be impossible to do on a car trip.
Critical care etc are powders that need mixing with water, so aren't very easy to use while on a car journey either, but once you are at your destination if you haven't been able to get CC etc, mushed nuggets and poop soup are pretty similar to recovery food - the nuggets provide fibre and vitamins, the poop soup the natural gut flora that the antibiotics might have reduced.

This link may be useful - how to make poo soup is towards the end Probiotics, Recovery Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links

As you are in the US, Guinea Lynx website may have more info on US stockists of Critical Care etc.

Well I tried practicing and mixing pellet paste but was unsuccessful in getting to a good consistency. It is either too thick to draw/dispense from a syringe or too liquid and too dilute to be useful. I'm out of options at this point. Tomorrow she will be going on 48 hours with no antibiotic because I had to stop baytril and have no contingency plan if the doxycycline causes total appetite loss. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow to see what I should do, but at this point its either risk the URI getting worse or risk her starving to death. Ugh I don't know what I'm doing wrong or what to do

When using mushed pellets you need to cut the tapered part off the end of the syringe to get it to go in
