Hi all,

I have been wanting to get guinea pigs for a few years now, and after moving into a new place last year we are finally settled and ready to take the plunge! I have just received the grids and am planning to build a C&C that is approx 13-14sq feet. My other supplies are now here or on the way- and so I have finally been thinking about actually getting my piggies!

This is when I realised I had hit a stumbling block! I've been trying to find a rescue near me - or one that is accessible on public transport as neither me nor my partner drive... I'm struggling to locate one I would be able to get to. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am in Leeds, willing to travel to an extent but wouldn't want a trip that would be too stressful for the piggies (or me lol)

Any suggestions welcome :)
Thanks!

There is a rescue in Keighly called Milhaven . I have adopted Guinea pigs from Milhaven .... and travelled there by train .

If you are interested , I will give you contact details.

Hi and welcome!

Milhaven Guinea Pig Rescue in Keighley is just restarting after a pause because of family commitment. They are your closest good standard rescue. I have adopted five piggies from there over the years. Mali was 5 years old and half blind when she travelled south to join my then dedicated cataract group, she lived until she was about 8 years old. My Pili Pala is still going 5 years after I went all the way by train and Hyfryd (who was found dumped and pregnant in a tree trunk in a Leeds park) and her rescue born daughter Hirael have come here 1 1/2 years ago. ;)
Their website is not back up yet, but they are active on facebook again. https://www.facebook.com/Milhaven-Guinea-Pig-Rescue-242212542587095/

The other good place would be Cavy Corner in Doncaster where you will also be in very safe and experienced hands. https://www.facebook.com/cavycorner/

Thankfully piggies travel pretty well! Travelling with guinea pigs

Our forum recommendations comply with or surpass minimal welfare recommendation, so if you are following them, there should be no problem with passing a rescue home check.

Hi all!
Thank you so much for your help! I'll definitely contact Milhaven
I travel by train often so Keighley would definitely work out well for me, hopefully they have piggies available soon :)
The last thing to arrive is my coroplast but it's supposed to be coming this week so looking forward to getting it in place and I think then I'm ready to start enquiring! Good to know they will be ok on the train, I was getting a bit worried about getting buses somewhere because I was worrying about them getting jolted about, but I guess the train is much smoother I hadn't thought of that!

I found the rescue that I got my pigs from on Perfinder. From there the lady who owned the rescue said to fill out an application (not on any specific pig) and that I got to pick them out as soon as we went. I picked the first to boars i saw and have been so happy ever since.

Hiya SappyShelly we prefer to recommend rescues that are on our approved list.

@Veggies Galore thank you for posting the links! Lovely to see and Sparkle looks like she is quite a little character and very inquisitive!
Yes, I just liked there fb page and saw that they have said they will be available for appointments soon, I'll keep checking back and will get in touch once they are :)
Quite excited now!

Oh yes, Sparkle is a character:))

Wiebke has posted lots of links for you to read too.... Which I recommend you read just to make sure you are making the right decision.

It's also worth looking at the events section where we post links to fundraising events going on.... and meet ups.

Yes thank you @Wiebke also! :tu: I must admit I have been lurking on the forum for the past year slowly making my way though lots of threads! I've wanted guinea pigs for for quite a while so once I knew we were moving (we were renting before and weren't allowed pets) I started researching! :))
I'll admit it's been quite eye opening! Especially the boar cleaning topics - I had no idea about that before!

Jo from Milhaven has started listing piggies for adoption on facebook now, among them this adorable closely bonded adult husboar and wife pair that are looking for an indoors home. They sound like the perfect starter pair used to being pets and being handled, so you can get going straight away! They've still got another 3-4 years to go with an average life span. ;)

Thanks @Wiebke !
I followed them on facebook but I missed this! I'm going to send them a message right now !
Thanks so much for the heads up, I really appreciate it

All the best! There is also a young adult pair of sows up for adoption.

Adult ex-pets that are used to a home environment make much better starter piggies than wiggly babies. It is a much more relaxed way of easing into the world of piggydom. ;)
