I noticed alot of people say don't get pets from pet stores, but the closest rescue is legit 9 hours away! :( i dont want to get guinea pigs from the pet store (i got my first one at petsmart, he died literally days after, i got my recent one at petco and hes lasting a long time, been a year already!) but from research people say its not good to get pets from pet stores so i want to stop. but where else could i get some if i dont have any rescue centers? any help would be very appreciated :luv::D

Hi

Rescues in Canada are sadly rarer than gold. :(

Please take a read of this link here; it gives you an honest assessment of the pros and the particular pitfalls to be aware off (and hopefully able to avoid) of all the various venues you can get piggies from: Rescues (Adoption and Dating), Shops, Breeders or Online? - What to consider when getting guinea pigs

A helpful place to start with and ask for Canada-specific tips may be this Ontario based Facebook place here. It is run by a previous rescue lady: Piggles.CARES (Log in to Facebook)

Is there perhaps someone near you rehoming their piggies privately? Someone that can't keep them anymore for whatever reason? At least then you're not supporting pet shops.

Hello— I’ve just joined this forum in hopes of finding someone wonderful who is looking to adopt some healthy guinea piggies.
I love, love, love the girls but in May this past year I had a very unfortunate accident and spent 7 weeks hospitalized. I’m up for more surgery yet and honestly don’t know for sure yet if I will keep my injured leg or not. Since I came home in July I have been keeping up the piggies care (while I was away it was a motley patchwork of about 8 people having keys to my apartment for salad and cleaning duties) but I find myself feeling more resentful of how much work it is. I also anticipate probably moving in the spring since the building I live in is not wheelchair accessible and that has been hard too. I really believe I will need to downsize. My kiddo is going to be heartbroken for a while to see the fur babies go- but we have to carry on in the best way possible… and as a single mom it’s time I cut myself some breaks where I can.

We are in Southwestern Ontario and our ladies are in good health and just over 2 years old. We got them together and they have always been together. One is definitely a dominant girl! The other is a sweet long haired lovely. Important to note that longhaired piggies need extra care— it was a surprise at about 3 months old when she sprouted long locks so at least you would know ahead of time what you’re getting.

Anyway- I would be open to talk.
If what I’ve said is of any interest please get in touch :)

I am so sorry to hear that you have to give up your piggies.
It’s clearly been a difficult decision but one you are making out of love for them.
Are there any rescues accessible to you who could take them?

I hope the surgery goes well and that you find a suitable place to live.
Holding you in my heart ♥️
