My Guinea pig is currently on nebulizer treatment for a URI and nebulizes with 0.9% sodium chloride saline solution. I would like to have more on hand for future cases but I’d rather not go back to my vet for it every time I need more just because it’s a bit expensive and doesn’t come in very large quantities. I found a 1000 ml bottle of it on Amazon that seems to be the same the same exact thing but I’m worried it’s not safe and just want to make sure it is. Is there any other type of solution I can buy that’s safe? Can I make my own?

Hi and welcome

You should be able to get sterile saline from any pharmacy if you do not trust online purchases although they should be ok.

You can make your own at home by boiling 250ml /half a pint of water in a kettle; let cool and then stir in 1 teaspoon of salt.

All the best!

Thank you so much. Sorry for late reply but just making sure, does it have to be distilled water or can it be regular water?

Homemade saline can be made from regular tap water - the boiling will kill off any germs.
