Hi all,

My 3 piggies live free range in our shed in a large pen with an open hutch. Just outside the pen, we have had an oil filled radiator on over the winter months, at a low heat constantly, to keep them cosy.

This week, daytime temps have been up to 10 degrees, so I am considering turning it off in the day, and just having it on at night, then phase it out at night as the night temps improve in March. Obviously in a cold snap it would go back on again.

Does this sound reasonable? Thank you for any advice :)

I think the guidance is that piggies like a temperature of no less than 15degrees. I would be tempted to leave it on during the day for a bit longer. I don't think we have had the last frost yet either.

My radiator is left on half during the day and full during the night. The cat spends his nights curled round the radiator as he's too old to sleep outside now. I like to keep the shed so it's comfortable for everyone.

Could you get a themostat control for it? That way you can set the temperature that's suitable and it will switch on and off when needed. I feel piggies cope fine with 10C temperatures, given adequate bedding and shelter. Mine are indoors and I don't have heating so the temperature certainly hasn't been 15C all winter. Though I don't disagree that 15C would be ideal!
