Hello everyone!
It's my first post on here.
My two boars were recently neutered and due to a complication one of them very sadly passed away yesterday. I don't want my remaining cavy to be alone, and will eventually pair him with a sow, but how long should I wait? I can keep a second pig in a different cage next to Flint for a while if that will be safest...
Should I find a sow the same age as Flint, or a baby? (Flint is 6.5 months)
I hope that all makes sense... Just want my boy to be happy x
Thank you x

I think it's 6 weeks after the op.
Hi and :wel:!
I am so sorry one of your boars has passed.:(

Thank you :)
Do you think he'll be okay on his own for that long, or should I slowly start to introduce a female (different cage) next to him sooner?
I think you wait as a precaution but you could put a female in a cage next to him but I am not totally sure.

Hello @Flinty :) welcome to our forum! So sorry you have lost one of your piggies :( When were your boys neutered? It is indeed 6 weeks you need to wait to avoid any little surprises but you may be able to start introducing them to one anothers smells and allowing them to chat by keeping the cages near each other in line of sight. Once the six weeks is up then you can start working on letting them share the same space.

Hi @Piggly , thank you for your response.
I'm a little heartbroken by Willow's death, as I'm sure you understand. They were both neutered on wednesday, which you can see was a very quick turnaround for what happened.
The other thing is that I'm at university, and my boys always travelled with me back to my parent's for holidays... The next holiday is in three weeks, so do you think I should leave Flint on his own until after this period as not to upset a new baby sow by making her travel?
x

@Flinty so sorry for your loss. Wait at least 6 weeks before introducing to ladies or you could have babies to deal with in top of everything else. Perhaps give Flint a soft toy and lots of cuddles as he recovers from surgery and from his loss. It doesn't need to be a young sow. You could find him an older sow looking for a companion and keep them separate but nearby so they can get used to each other but do no damage!.

Welcome to the forum . I am so sorry to hear that you lost one of your boars. It would be useful to have an idea where you are located ( County would help).

I always recommend that guinea owners contact a local rescue to find a compatible companion.

Hi x
I'm in Cornwall, though my parents are in Dorset and I'll be visiting them with Flint in 3 weeks x

We will tag @Little Pips Rehoming for you, as taking your boy to a rescue to pick his forever friend is definitely the best option..

:wel:to the forum..

In the meantime can you please add your location to your profile as it helps fellow members give any answers to questions you may have that may be area/country specific. Age is not as important as mutual liking. You can look at one or two sows if the rescue doesn't have any Singles. My own neutered boars live happily with sows that are up to 3 years older or younger. Dating at a rescue is by far the best way, so you come only home with companions if acceptance has happened. Little Pips does offer residential dating over the course of a Weekend, so you can neatly avoid having to sit out the rougher end of the bonding. There can be a waiting list depending on whether there are sows ready for rehoming and how much time the rescue Lady has, as bonding is very time intensive, but it is really worth it! All three recommended rescues off dating.

I would strongly recommend to wait the full 6 weeks. One of my piggies is the unplanned daughter of a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post op boar (not one of mine), so it can really happen as late as that.

PS: I am ever so sorry for your loss. It must have been so upsetting for you! You are welcome to post a Tribute in our Rainbow Bridge section if you wish to.
