Hi :) Guinea pig newbie here! I have two baby boys (a few months old) and they are in a conventional cage at the moment (we got the biggest they had, 140cm I think). We want to purchase a 2x5 C&C cage for them because we think they are great but at the moment we are scared that they will be able to escape through the grids because they are little. When would be a good age to move them into a C&C cage?

I've got a 12wk & a 16wk old piggies & never escaped yet.
The only time one of them escaped was the youngest jumped out of a run it was only 9" high though

Hi and welcome - it's probably more about size of your piggies than age - but you are right that when they are young the gaps can be too big. If you want to move them now, there are several options you could consider.

If you are going to use fleece, peg it up over the sides so there are no holes for them to get through.

Another option is to double up the grids offset from each other though so that it makes the holes smaller.

Hope those ideas help. I'm not an expert on baby piggies so hopefully someone else will be able to give you a rough idea of average age when babies are big enough to not fall through.

Our latest baby went into a C&C at 10 weeks old.
She weighed 420 grams at the time.
She was never even close to escaping, so I hope that helps.

Thanks folks :)

We considered flyscreen round the cage and attached with little bulldog clips but don't want to cut off their air supply or anything. One of the boys is a bit of a rebel so he would 100% try to squeeze through the gaps - or climb the grids! Haha.

If you're not putting a lid on the cage, you shouldn't need to worry about cutting air supply off.

Definitely not putting a lid on it, I want to be able to watch the boys running and playing (I'm turning into one of those obsessive mothers lol).

It's very addictive :love::nod:

Ours is on the edge of our living area (open plan into the hall area) so we are constantly watching what they are up to. We've got a group of 4 girls in a large c&c set up and then a pair of girls right next to them in a commercial cage set up. We are lucky that if we go away my mum lives only a few doors away so we don't have to move them as she comes in at least twice a day to see them but I often think how quiet it must be for them without our family of 5 humans crashing around and poking our noses in at them.

They definitely steal your heart! My Gran, who dislikes anything rodenty, is already calling them her two grandsons

I moved the babies over to the c&c at 1 month

My girls have been in a C&C cage since I got them at 5 weeks old. Never escaped.
I did, however, cut the correx at 15cm high for the sides, so that probably helped prevent them from escaping. I doubt they would have fitted through the bars though.

My 10-12 week (guess!) sow who weighed 350g managed to get her stuck in a grid within 5 mins of being in the cage! I pinned fleece up around the hay tray and the correx sides took care of the rest x
