Hi,

I got my two guinea pigs Valoria and Sakura out for a bit of lap time, they simply lay on a warm blanket on my bed while I sat near them. Sakura has always made odd noises around her cage, kind of like short and quick wheeking sounds, (sorry it's tough to explain) I thought it was chutting at first as it sounds like a little conversation she's having when she's lost her sister or she's just exploring.

I got her out for lap time, she was ok for a few minutes and started making that noise, I thought it was just because I was stroking her and she didn't want me too but then Valoria walked over to me and sat by my lap, granted she pooed so that was her signal she needed the bathroom and then she started making a similar noise?

Is is genuine chatter and nothing to be worried about? I hope they don't hate me haha! they are running around their cage now fine and don't seem too tramuamitised by me getting them out their cage even if Sakura gave me the run around.

Sakura started teeth chattering at one point which I think it sounded like which I gathered was her just getting annoyed at being out of her cage for longer than she liked.

Has anyone got any good links to websites which have sounds of guinea pigs explained so I can figure out why my girls are making their sound?

Thanks!

It sounds like the noise most piggies make when out. It’s a sort of location beacon to let the others know where they are.
Mine 2 younger girls are incapable of playing out without this squeaky noise all the time

That’s good then. I looked at a YouTube video by little adventures I think it was and she explained it as an explorative squeak kind of noise. It’s not very low in tone so I figured it was nothing too alarming that they were terrified. Thanks for the answer though, I’ve spent so many years owning hamsters and rabbits I forgot the sounds guinea pigs make haha

It sounds like normal 'stay in contact' chatter. Guinea pigs have evolved in groups living in dense grasslands. They stay in contact via vocal updates. As a rule of thumb, the louder and more intense the higher the feelings. Youngsters between 3-4 and 4 months of age are the loudest and most vocal, and some can be real drama queens; that is the time when they are at their most vulnerable, so it is important for the survival of the group as a whole to have a way of keeping taps.
Guinea Pig Facts - A Short Overview

A lot of pigs make a bit of a whistling, twittering sound when they are contentedly going about their business. I've heard that it helps pigs to stay in touch with the other pigs if they are out of sight. A lot of my pigs make this sound when we pat them or when they are running around freely. My kids call it the happy piggy noise. I've had some pigs who are relatively quiet and don't make this sound a lot, and others who are downright noisy and always 'talking' to us.
