Hi! I need some help identifying what’s happening to my piggies ear. Winston is almost 3, and I’ve had him since he was a few weeks old. I have 3 make guineas and all of them for over two years. Yesterday I noticed this spot on his ear, it’s a little bigger today.

They all had ringworm when I first got them, but this was years ago. Can ringworm come back randomly without exposure? Is it just a scab? Is it mites? We keep their cage clean and I deep clean it often. Not sure what’s happening. Hope someone can help me

Ok I can’t figure out how to upload a photo from my phone. Can someone help with that too so I can show the photo of his ear… thank you!

If you press on the button saying ‘attach files’ on the bottom left you should be able to upload one :)

For some reason I do not have have an attach files button. I have seen pictures of where it should be but mine doesnt have it. Is there another suggestion that you think could work? I see a picture icon but it makes me have to have a http link

It takes a while for your registration to complete in the background before you can add pictures.

Please do have it checked by a vet - it looks more fungal than parasite to me.

To catch something, there will have been exposure.
Ringworm, for example, can be carried in a variety of ways but the spores can also live in the environment for around two years and can cause re-infection.
Piggies tend to have mites on their skin all the time but are kept in check by a functioning immune system. If the immune system is weakened for any reason, then the parasites can take off

Okay thank you for your help. Just so weird. Have you ever seen anything like this and it be nothing? Just a scab or dry skin? I clean their cage and cage liner so frequently i have no idea how ringworm could live still. It’s been over 2 years since my pigs had it.

I will definitely take him to the vet just trying to figure it out so he isn’t in pain or uncomfortable

Got it ! Thanks everyone

Please have him see by a vet for a fungal infection (likely ringworm). Ringworm spores can stay live for over 2 years but they can also be carried or blown into the house. Ringworm piggies can also suffer an outbreak quite a while later if their immune system dips and they still have an infected spot in their skin.

Our own forum guide concentrates especially on the hygiene measures to ensure that no spores are carried forward: Ringworm: Hygiene, Care And Pictures
