Helloooo,

I am in need of some guidance! My pigs have their own area and they're currently using a halogen heater with a thermostat. The halogen is perfect for giving instant heat and it does heat up the room; I know this as I keep 2 thermometers in different areas of the room. BUT, once it turns off the heat pretty much drops instantly and I need something that will maintain the warmth in the room for a longer period.

I’ve tried oil filled radiator but I don’t know whether it’s the type I bought, it was rubbish! So I went back to halogen. I know about snugglesafes and they have one in their enclosures.

My halogen has been on for almost 24 hours a day and I need something that is going to be more effective for the pigs but also my bank balance. Lol!

Can anyone recommend anything? Convector heater?!

Are your guinea pigs indoors ?

I have an oil filled radiator to keep the temperature within an acceptable range... In a insulated shed and I find it works very well.

I wonder if it might be the type of radiator you had as I used to have one in an office I worked in and it was brilliant.

I left the oil filled heater on for more than 6 hours to test it out and it made little change in the temp. I hear halogen is cheap to run but for 24 hours a day every day? I don’t think so. Since the temp dropped in end of September to now, it’s been on for almost 24 hours every day.

Maybe you could tell us a bit about the room they are kept in ie is it an uninsulated conservatory etc it may help somebody have an idea on a better heat source. Also, are they in a c&c cage or a commercial cage? Maybe there is a way to use covers to help hold heat in the cage?
You say you have one snugglesafe in their enclosure, maybe try a couple more in the meantime? I use four between my two boys but they live in a hutch in my shed.

I use small oil filled radiator that are on 24/7 set on a thermostat and they work well.

We also use oil filled radiators in the house (my piggies are in the living room), we have one in every room. Not sure how long it is on though coz hubby sets the timer (I can't figure out how to set those flipping dials :mal:). We are managing the room temp at around 20C.

Mine just have what we do ie the radiator when the heating comes on.

Rabbits in an outdoor shed (well insulated) have an oil filled radiator to take the edge off. It is on 24/7.

At the moment I just have the central heating on for half an hour at 9pm, half an hour at midnight, and half an hour at 6am. I have bought an oil filled radiator for my skinny pig but not used it yet! I've also bought foam rubber draft excluding insulating tape to go round my windows and very drafty back door that I hope to fit in the next couple of weeks, and I plan on having the radiator on near the cage in the evenings then once its warmed up putting a big fleece blanket over the cage overnight :) plus a couple of snugglesafes- its my first time overwintering a skinny pig in a rather cold house so I want to be prepared!

I have a thermostatically controlled ceramic radiator to keep my piggy room at 18 degrees C overnight for my skinny pigs. It saves keeping my central heating on all night. If my house gets below 15 degrees C my central heating comes on anyway.

is oil filled radiator expensive to run for that period of time?! I’m wondering whether it’s because of the type I bought or maybe I should have left it on all day to fully test it out but I thought over 6 hours of it being on should have warmed up the room more than halogen! The pigs are in our spare room in the house. my boys are in a handmade wooden cage and the girls are in C&C - all on fleece.

I dont know if it is expensive or not ... Sorry. Not sure hoe to work it out. They need it so it has to happen.
