Can someone please let me know what type of cranberry juice to buy my guinea pigs? I know it's supposed to be unsweetened and no added sugar but I can't find this anywhere. I was looking at the brand ocean spray which some people have recommended but when I looked at the ingredients the original ocean spray cranberry juice appears to have added sugar and the light one seems to have added sweetener? Thanks.

hi , if you are using cranberry juice to help make your pig's bladder more acid , then i would go for fresh , cranberries as the processed stuff usually has some chemicals added to it , even if it is just the gas used to preserve it in the container , it is still a chemical.

Cranberries are not needed for a UTI; I have never found that it has made any difference with piggies of mine, to be honest. It also doesn't affect the natural alkalinity of guinea pig urine, which makes guinea pigs more prone to urinary tract problems than other species.

Extra vitamin C will do to help strengthen the immune system. Even more useful is feeding mildly diuretic veg like young dandelions, lettuce, cucumber or celery chunks to help flush the bladder and ease the acute symptoms in the early days. (Don't overdo it, though, so you don't end up with squishy poos or diarrhea!)

Cranberry juice may help in some cases when you are dealing with an interstitial cystitis (a recurring inflammation of the bladder walls) according to some people, but again, it has not made any difference with any piggies of mine.

Did you get some metacam (anti-inflammatory and painkiller) together with the septrin or just septrin?

I agree with Wiebke, the latest school of thought is that Cranberry juice does not help UTI's, I think there was an article in Guinea Pig magazine about it. My piggy has a daily dose of Potassium Citrate which is not very tasty, but as she also has daily low dose of Metacam, I usually suck that up in the same syringe after the PC & find she will happily take it :)

Never found cramburry juce to help, but i couldent say wherther they help? some
keepers swere bu them !

Hi! I have never found cranberry juice to be effective, but I know people who have! It's always best to use fresh cranberries! And if possible, home grown ones! Because you know exactly what's gone into the soil! Just water!

I think it really depends on the piggie whether it's effective.. I don't have LOTS of experience in this area, as I only cared for a friends pig who was on septrin.... But it didn't help them, but i have heard of occasions where it is effective! So maybe just try it out, if there seems to be no change, stop giving them to your piggie! But it can't do any harm to try!

I would check it out with your vet first, just in case your pig has any other conditions that the cranberries might effect!

Hope this helps!
