We just bought uhaul pads, and fleece fabric. Washed the fleece 3 times, cut, trimmed, etc. We put it in our cage (we have a midwest cage for now, as we have a mom and baby daughter they like to stay close) my question is do we/should we put anything under the uhaul pad? As the baby gets older and bigger we will build them a c&c cage, but was wondering if anything should be placed between the canvas/coroplast and the uhaul pad underneath?

Your absorbent layer needs to sit on something waterproof to stop whatever is under your cage getting damaged, so if you have a coroplast base that is ideal. You don’t need to put anything between the coroplast base and your uhaul. I’d be wary of using canvas though as that might get damp and will be difficult to wipe clean. My correx gets a good scrub at cage change as it does get a bit grim from pee that has soaked through.

We don’t have coroplast yet, that’ll come when we build the c&c cage. Right now we have the Midwest Cage, which just has a canvas base. The uhaul pad sits on that, and the fleece is on top. I was wondering if right now we need to put any additional material under the uhaul pad.

I haven’t seen a Midwest cage so when you say canvas I am picturing my friends beautiful Bell tent, in which case I would put a layer of something, shower curtain, oilcloth, in between to protect it and make cleaning easier.

But if a Midwest owner comes along and disputes that then I won’t argue, like I say, I haven’t ever seen one.

You definitely need a waterproof base layer under the U-hal pad to protect the fleece.
Waterproof table cloths are often a good choice and shower curtains can also work, but you need ot check they are waterproof and not just shower proof.

here is our cage. it’s technically the “all living things guinea pig penthouse” it has waterproof canvas as the base. I have the uhaul liner on the bottom, and fleece on the top and i used clips to clip it to the sides an inch or two.

A cheap waterproof shower curtain or waterproof tablecloth under the cage. Lino offcut is good too for inside he cage or underneath it. We get the Sunday Times so use it up beneath the hay and fleece matts or puppy pads could be used.

The plastic floor mats sold to go under baby high chairs are very good, we use these to protect our laminate floor when the piggies have playpen time!

Oh great ideas! Do you think we SHOULD put something under the uhaul pad or is that absorbent enough?

If it was me I would put lino on the floor of the cage to stoo the canvass base getting wet.
