ok - I'm currently building the outdoor run for the girls - the first 6 x 4 ft section will be a enclosed on 3 sides, with a solid top, connected to the solid mesh "open" section (also 6 x 4), But dont know what to plant as
a) cover
b)snacks
c)ground coverage.

Any suggestions for grass seed mixes that they'll find tasty, and snacky plants/herbs that they cant overdo, and will take plenty of chomping?

Ill also need some cover for the open section that they wont eat but could use as a hideaway!

Trying to make it as natural as possible, particularly as mine will be semi-outdoor piggies - they have a big (soon to be 3 level) run inside an outbuilding, and a pop-hole (closed at night) to this outdoor run, so constant access to the fresh air, as well as a cosy and dry indoor space.

Also for the really cold months, what do people thing about vivarium heat mats for the bedding area's?

(hands up these will be very SPOILED piggies!)

Yarrows (achillea millefolium) spring to mind - I grew up with a couple of piggies that loved nothing better than wiggling their way into a big clump and chomping on the leaves; as both boys lived to a healthy 6 resp. 9 years, it obviously didn't hurt them.

I found that Minx liked napping under my rock rose (cistus) if you have a protected space against a southfacing face/wall. Many low growing, fairly dense shrubs will do. You can grow organic roses, if you don't mind the occasional stem bitten off in case your piggies decide on a bit of "gardening".

A favourite in my garden is crocosmia; they like to sit underneath and chomp on the leaves; but the young shoots and small clumps need protection at first!

As ground cover I can recommend golden marjoram or thyme - they won't eat it down, but you can use it in the kitchen, and it's green all year round, if you cut it back twice yearly. Grow mint, lemon balm, fennel, dill, celery leaves, bird seed sproutings (will need protection at first, or they'll be eaten down) for eating.

Soft-edged ornamental grasses; better outside, so you can give them the offcuts from a "haircut". Don't plant them inside, or they'll be gone in no time!

I have no idea but can I move in with your pigs?:)):)):))
