I'm new at this so want to get it right, i read that sawdust/woodshavings isn't good for piggies, because of the dust, i got a bag with the cage from Pets At home but am reluctant to put it in for my girls, so for now i have just lined the bottom of the cage with newspaper and put hay in the den and cottage.

Whats best to use, or is it ok with what i have done ?

Thanks

The paper won't really absorb. You need some form if bedding or fleece.I use finacard in my litter trays but a lot of people like Fitch or auboise and they aren't that expensive There is a thread on here about bedding

I didn't know you could have litter trays, i just thought they poo'd everywhere ?

Some piggies tend to pee/poo in corners and/or are semi litter trained in that they will pick certain spots so placing trays helps with the cleaning process. Unfortunately some piggies (like the majority of mine!) like to pee/poo everywhere!

Newspaper can work but you would need to replace it often as it becomes soggy pretty quickly. As madguinealady has said finacard, fitch or aubiose are good options if you want to use a loose bedding rather than something like fleece or vetbed.

Mine do most of their weeks in the litter trays but poo everywhere but that is easy to sweep up.I have big c&c cages so bedding isn't practical. My litter trays have newspaper then finacard then their hay.I peg a cover over the cage where they are and this encourages them to use them.

They do poo everywhere but you can encourage them to do their "worst" of it in a litter tray by putting hayrack above tray as they poo whilst eating .

if you want to use a "throw away" material as bedding you can get finacard or fitch. Or you could use aubiose which is hemp based or there are a couple of oilseed rape ones out there too. Check out the reviews in the sticky threads at the top of the page!

I have just started using Fitch for my hamsters and it's great and I would definitely recommend it if you want a throw away bedding. Otherwise I recommend vetbed or fleece. I have hanging fleecy haybags for their hay. Have at look at the bedding stickies to see what you prefer.
