I had Georgie neutered today and he is now home. The op went well and he ate a bit afterwards but now he is in his cage sitting in a corner not moving :-\ I am offering food but he isnt interested. I know he is sore etc but just wondered those that have experience of having a guinea neutered, how were your guineas afterwards?

I have metacam to give him and of course I will keep an eye and syringe feed if necessary but any experiences would be useful :)

I'm yet to neuter a boar but when i had my bunny done he acted exactly as you described fo a day but then regained his appetite, I put it down to sulking

Thanks, I think he is really sore but I hope he forgives me when he moves in with 2 girlfriends ;)

Hi

I have only ever had Murphy done, and i picked him up about 2 and he looked all ruffled up and tired so i left him quiet in his bed while until about five then he got out of his cuddle cup and ate his tea as normal. The vets gave him a pain killing injection while he was at the vets.

I could not believe how well he got over it it suprised me how good he was after.

Hope your little guy comes round soon i think the key is to keep him quiet and warm then get him eating again as soon as possible.

Keep us updated. We will be thinking of him :smitten:

Don't have any practical advice but hope the little guy feels better soon Fiona. Keeping everything crossed for a speedy recovery just keep telling him and yourself what a wonderful time he will have with his wives in a few weeks time! ;)

Thanks guys. I have given him a drop of metacam and he ate one mint leaf. I syringed him 10ml water which he took ok and 5ml carrot & potato baby food which he seemed to like and now he has munched a little hay. I will leave him in peace for a while.

I will check him throughout the night :)

I'm sure he'll be fine Fiona :) he's in great hands, and he'll thank you for it once he's able to mingle! ;D

He is brighter this morning and walking around and is eating :) His stitches look fine so very happy about that O0

I syringed him water a couple of times during the night as he isnt a good drinker but he seems more himself now ;) :smitten: :smitten:

So glad to hear Georgie is up and about this morning - keep up the good work Fiona. :)

I am so please your little man is feelingg better, keep us posted. its makes all my bottom go funny when you mention stitches :D

I know them, his poor ballies are history ;D He has his post op check tomorrow so will update you, I think he is going to be fine but still have to worry or it wouldnt be me ::)

;D ;D ;D I know what you mean :embarassed:

Glad to hear he's doing well Fi O0

So pleased Georgie is feeling better. It does take a few days for them to recover from the operation.
I have had three boars neutered and all have been fine after a day or so.

I am sure that Georgie will be firing on all cylinders very soon, albeit two cylinders less than before, but I am sure he will be more than happy when he moves in with his two girlfriends! :smitten:

Hope your little one is feeling a bit brighter by now. I think the whole experience is a little unsettling for them not just the aneasthetic but being somewhere strange too. Piggies like familiarity so it's quite normal for him to be out of sorts for a day or two. Syringing is a good idea then you are sure he is getting fluids. Perhaps treat him to a little alfalfa hay too.

I have always kept mine on vetbed after the op and change it every day for about two weeks, I just top up with enough hay to eat as normal. I'm sure he'll be fine but although technically he can go in with the sows in two weeks time I like to leave mine longer. It takes a long time for the internal stitches to disolve and until they have there is still a remote possibility of an abscess. Just check for any obvious sores etc but also gently feel all around the area for any lumps/swellings deep within the body. I check for several weeks after on a daily basis.

Not sure whether it's something you are already doing but I also give a Vit C supplement for a week as in times of stress/trauma/upheaval the body demands more Vit C and their supplies are easily depleted even though regular veg etc is available I liike to cover all possibilities.

All the neuters I've had done have recovered pretty quickly but some have definately been a bit quiet for a few days but in no time at all they run and popcorn (ouch!) just as they did before.
It's such a lovely sight seeing a boar with his ladies, I've never had a problem with the bonding process and the ladies always remain in charge !

All the best for his check up tomorrow O0

Thank you for that Summerleaze.

He is on vetbed which I am changing daily and thanks for the other tips about the vit C and what to check for ;)

He is doing well Julie, he is resting a lot but he is eating and walking around. I am still syringing him water throughout the day as he isnt drinking and I just want to keep him flushed through. I will update after the vets checkup this evening :)

I had 2 of our boys done and were very quiet for the first back day, but when we took them back on the weekend to get their stitches out, louis had puss where the stitches were and is now on baytril for the week.

Georgie doesnt have to have his stitches out, they are disolvable ones. He is still a bit quiet but I imagine he is quite sore.

i was hoping it would be the dissoluble ones cose i always worry it will hurt taking stitches out, but they were fine - yeah mine were sore for a bit, everytime i would pick up Louis especially he would scream, but is fine now!

Georgie has had his check up and is doing fine O0 His bits aren't swollen and the stitches are all intact and the area is clean so I am really pleased :smitten: :smitten:

Anne, the vet did a great job O0

Georgie is impacted now :( David noticed last night that there wern't any pellets after 3-4 hours so I cleaned him out last night and again this morning. The poo is soft so not sure why this is happening now. He is eating and bright in himself. Going to ring the vet in a mo :-\

Vet said to keep him hydrated which is what I am doing anyway and help him go to the toilet. If no better in a day or two, have to bring him back.

Hi Fi, are you seeing Anne Taylor? At least she's a fab GP vet, so between the two of you George is in excellent hands. Try not to worry, hopefully it will sort itself out soon :)

Yes Julie, but Anne isnt back until Monday. I am unsure if he can't push the pellets out because he feels sore or perhaps he isnt eating enough hay to form pellets as the poo in the anal sac is squishy. He raises himself up on his legs and looks like he is straining but nothing is coming out ::)

It could be that he is sore and has been off his food and water ... give him plenty of vegs and hay. Apparently cucumber is 100% water which might have to re-hydrate him.

If he has been sitting around feeling a little sorry for himself then that may not have helped his bowels.

I am sure he will perk up soon ... I think we just all need a bit a sun - us to sit in a sun lounger and the piggies to go out in a run (on dry grass! ::))

Let us know how he goes along!

Thanks guys. He has perfomed and done 9 poops in the last hour ;D I am so happy......or is it sad? ::)

Only sad when you have to clean them up Fi ::) But that's great news!

You know, I've never talked about poo so much since I've been a piggie slave... ;D
