Some of you probably already know that I used to own two boy piggies, Reggie and Eddie, and with Reggie having sadly passed away recently this left Eddie by himself.

The simple solution is boar dating... however... he has been boar dating this week, and I had a feeling his personality would be too much for any boar to deal with. In a normal situation I would just take him boar dating again at a later date. However, I think his personality is simply not going to win him any male friends. He is a dominant pig, and is insistent on reaffirming this constantly. He barely got along with Reggie, suggesting that he may not be able to settle with another male at all.

Rather than taking him boar dating again which may waste time where he is stressed out being alone at home, and stressed out sniffing bums with boars who can't get along with him, I think the best solution is to get him neutered and find him a pair of wifepigs. A pair would be best so he doesn't focus all of his behaviour on one pig.

However this is in territory I'm uncertain of, and so need the opinion of those more experienced with going down these roads of neutering to introduce a male to female company. Anyone have any thoughts?

I will look forward to seeing the answers you get to this thread as I am still learning about neutered boar /sow relationships.
I was able to get my boar (Max) paired with 2 sows recently. They have been together nearly 2 weeks now.
I am new to owning piggies and I am finding their behaviour fascinating.
Max is definately trying to make out he is the dominant member of the trio. The older sow doesn't seem bothered but the younger sow is turning out to be at the bottom of the hierarchy. Watching their antics is better than watching the telly.

I was just looking at their photos! They are sweet. Can I ask what Max's personality was like before he lived with ladies? Did he not get along with boars?

Unfortunately, my 2 boars never got on but they weren't bonded when I got them. I was very new to Guinea Pig ownership and have learnt a lot in hindsight.
I separated Max from Monty when I observed him approaching Monty with his teeth chattering. I tried to put them back together twice. The first time , Max ran around looking for Monty and Monty ran away looking terrified. The 2nd time I put them together, Monty tried to mount Max.
I will never know for sure if Max would have got on with a boar he had been properly bonded with. I am happy to post my observations of their behaviour but don't want to take over your thread.

Oh dear, and she's handing him back to you as a bachelor... Eddie, hang your head in shame ;)

Well, it raises hope that it may be a good option for Eddie. What I would be worried about is whether he would scare off the ladies too! But if there are two pigs and they are female it could be a different matter.

As it turns out - he is too old for neutering at 4.5 years! So that answers that. The only solution is keep going back every couple of months for boar dating!

It's just as well I love him lots!

This does mean I am looking at adopting more piggies to live in another cage however... :D
