Hello,
My Shura's eye has cleared up and looks normal and healthy. However, today I have noticed he is not so interested in food. For two days about he has not been interested in his pellets. He is eating hay, some lettuce and a little bit of pepper, however it is not with his usual appetite. When I make a sound with a plastic bag, he gets excited as he did before but is not eating as much as he usually does. His droppings are smaller, they are formed but very small. He has eaten some lettuce and some hay, but he has no interest in pellets. I have a vet appointment for him Wednesday.

What can this be? :'( Do guinea pigs ever have off days?

Hi love, it could be his toofies......... they still want to eat but get a bit fussy, mmmmmmm could be an off day maybe an upset tum... i'm glad you're going to the vets on wednesday.
Meanwhile why don't you mix up some pellets with pre boiled water cooled down and feed off spoon to supplement O0
Healing wheeeeeeeeeks and loves for little Shura :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
So pleased the eye has cleared up, he does make you worry doesn't he :smitten:

You think I can boil water and mix it with the pellets? Should I make it mushy? I will try :) Good idea!

Yes, I love my Shura so dearly as if he was my child :smitten: He's such a snuggly pig and if anything is wrong it is so upsetting :'(. I agree with you that it may be his teeth.

Let's hope he appears a little better tomorrow!

If it is possibly his teeth, what is it with his teeth and how can is possibly be fixed? I do remember when he was younger, maybe 2 years ago(Before we got Hriusha) when he pawed at his mouth and was not interested in food. I was so panicked. We brought him to the vet, they looked in his mouth and said nothing obvious was wrong, that he did have a lot of saliva so it was difficult to see exactly. I brought him home and he was fine! eating as before. Possibly it is related to that. I hope it is nothing serious. Poor little guy :( He turned 4 in march, is this considered old?

One quick thing, what is "pre boiled water"?

It's water that has been boiled and then cooled down. Just a term for cooled, boiled water....sterilized water.

It's a term we use in OZ.

i agree with glynis, it sounds like his teeth need trimming and this is why he is not eating. sending hugs and healing vibes to you and shura :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: good luck at the vet tomorrow O0 please keep us posted, perhaps try some fresh grass to tempt him with O0

Hello,
What is OZ? And how do they trim a guinea pig's teeth?

I wouldn't want them to sedate him because I am afraid he wouldn't wake up :(

oz is short for australia. most vets put piggies to sleep to do teeth as they have to open the piggies mouth wide to get to the back ones. there are vets in the UK who are experienced enough to do piggies teeth with out sedation. to cut a piggies teeth i am guessing as my piggies have never had it done, but they use a file to file them down. and use like a drill to clean them. perhaps contact maryh as her vet emails vets all over the world to help them treat guinea pigs, thanks to them my zoe had surgery in january and the little sweetheart pulled through it like a trooper. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: glynis's duke gets his teeth trimmed at the vet every 3 weeks as for some reason duke won't eat hay :o :o :o good luck with it but would ask maryh and speak to her and see if her vet can contact yours O0 hugs and healing vibes :smitten:
:smitten: :smitten: to you both O0

sending healing vibes for Shura :smitten: :smitten:

Knowledge about piggies has improved soo much, my last boy was nearly 7 when he went to the bridge and Glynis's little Duke turned 6 in February. So dont worry about Shura being old.

Hope all goes well at the vets keep us posted O0 O0

Do you think if they sedate Shura to trim his teeth that he will survive? I am nervous he wouldn't live through it :'( He is okay today, same as yesterday. He ate some lettuce and hay. I've cut some carrots up very small but he is not too interested. He is sitting. I feel bad I really wish he would eat. I hope it is nothing serious :( Hriusha never gets problems like this, but Shura seems more sensative.

Could it possibly be URI? Or if it was URI wouldn't he not be eating at all? I hope the vet can identify the problem.

How do they treat URI?

Hello everyone,
Shura was put to sleep today :'(. We brought him to the vet and it turned out it was heart failure or serious pnemonia. Treatment would not have helped. It is devistating and I cannot believe my Shura is gone :'( He was the best pig. I miss him so much and am crying a lot :'( :'( It is good to know he is not in pain and in a better place. I held him to say good bye and he was very relaxed and sleepy. Then they took him. I miss him so much :'(

I wanted to thank all of you for your concern and care. I still can't believe he was so sick.

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Thank you all so much for your concern, Shura is in a better place now and having fun with unlimited amounts of hay and all his favorite veggies. 0:)

Do you think Hriusha misses him? The lived next to each other for two years about. I am worried he is lonely.

I miss little Shura :'(

I am so sorry for your sad loss.It is always heartbreaking to lose a piggy.

Hruisha probably will be lonely.Would it be possib le for youmto go to a rescue and get a friend for him?.It is possble the new boar would live with him,but if not,he could live next door as Shura did.Getting a new piggy settled in would help ease your pain as well.

Aw so sorry to hear about your loss! Poor little piggy! :'( It seems like he went without warning, too. RIP little one! :(

Leslie

Thank you all very much. I'm so upset and cannot stop cring :'(I keep thinking somebody is looking after him like when I go away and that I need to go get him... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( I miss him terribly

I would love to get Hriusha a friend... however I'm off to university in a year but it is for Hriusha to have a friend.

is it better go get a baby or an adult? Should I go to a rescue or pet store?

Hriusha is eating and seems all right which is a relief. What else can I do in the mean time to comfort him?

I appreciate all the help and care 0:)

if you are going to university in a year then maybe it is best if you don't get hriusha a friend, if he is eating and appears alright then i would leave it and see how he goes over the next few days. you may still have shura's cage next to him so he can smell the scent of his friend.
who will look after hriusha when you go to university? if he appears lonely you could try him with a teddy or stuff animal to cuddle up too. or if you want to get him s friend get 2 younger boars, i say two as if hriusha is 4 then the new piggy may be alone if anything were to happen to hriusha.
i would also give hriusha lots of cuddles and talk to him and perhaps have him inside with you in his cage so he has you for company O0
if you do get new piggies get them from a rescue and scrub shura's cage out and air it before you get anymore more piggies. O0 so for now i would cuddle hriusha more, bring his home inside so he has you for company, give him something to sleep with and keep an eye on him O0 sending you both hugs :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Yes, his cage is just downstairs so I am by his cage often :) I'm trying him with some stuffed animals but he seems to prefer his purple fuzzy bed. I moved Shura's cage because whatever Shura had I don't want Hriusha to catch. I 'm not sure if it was even contagious, it was heart failure and pnemonia or something like that :'(

When I'm in uni my parents will look after Hriusha, however I will be close by. I also have a close friend who looks after them when we go away who would love to help.

You're right, I will cuddle him for now and give him lots of attention. I volunteer at a rescue so if any piglets come by I will see them :)

Thank you very much :)

-Ksiusha and Hriushka

RIP Shurochka 0:) 0:) 0:)
