what should i do if my guinea pigs wont eat new hay and is eating very minimal

i dont know what to do

Hi

Is it a totally new hay brand/variety or a new bag of their usual variety?

In the first case, you can try and do a cold turkey and trust that at some point hunger will take over since it is their main source of food and they cannot afford to hold out for too many days. In the second case it is more likely that there is a problem with the hay bag. You can feed a bit more pellets for a week to bolster the transition or give in an go back to the old variety.

Guinea pigs have actually roughly double the amount of taste buds compared to humans and about five times the amount of cats. They learn what is edible and what not as youngsters from their elders but they can be very wary of any new foods.

Mine currently giving me the cold shoulder treatment over (better quality) pellets that have come with my latest arrival; junk addicts that they are. They will eat them eventually but will turn away in distaste if I offer them by hand.

Please switch from weighing once weekly on your normal kitchen scales to weighing daily first thing in the morning.
