I am currently using woodshavings but have bought 2 bags of pellets and am thinking of using just them, although it is gonna be quite expensive - I find it would look nicer and be a lot more hygienic and easy to clean.

However, are they 100% safe for them?

Is it safe for hamsters too as he is long haired and the sawdust sticks to his fur...

What do you use? Is there anything better than pellets that you could recommend?

I've just started using fleece and towels in there cage they have newspaper and hay just rolleyes, the run they have have newspaper, cotton towels and fleece! :))

Mine are outdoor squeakers. Newspaper (begged off virtually everybody we know who has them), with a thick layer of hay on top (which they eat, even though I put hay in a rack for them). I did this as a child and I still think it works well as I can just roll the newspapers up and dump the whole thing in a black binbag. So long as I put a thick enough layer of newspaper down and clean them out twice a week (would like a bigger cage so I could reduce this to once a week), their pee doesn't seep through to the wooden floor of the hutch.

mine are on newspaper then a layer of towel and then fleece on top,its absorbamt, comfy on there feet and looks pretty too,i would personally go with vetbed, fleece or hay also sawdust is bad for piggies it causes respiratory problems so they get quite ill so i wouldnt use this at all, shavings generally arent recommended either, megazorb is another option xxxxx

Where do you get fleece? Does it need cleaning loads?

Ah I just thought the pellets won't be the comfiest for their little feet. :(

It sounds cute when they run through it though! :(|)

I am going to give them a good clean then tonight, they don't need it but I want rid of the shavings. :)

I'm in oz so its hard for me to say but i think a place there called tesco or something has fleece and also art and craft shops,if it has towels and newspaper its quite good,it also depends on how dirty your pigs are lol,i change mine every two days but i do that regardless of any bedding they have been on xx

Primark, dunns, B & M bargains anywere... it's the throws for couches and stuff! I clean mine every 3 days but do spot checks so far I don't find it too smelly!

Ah didn't realise, so any kind of fleece is safe for them? I do have one so that will be going in tonight and I might put some pellets in also to absorb the worst!

They are messier than they are dirty, brocolli everywhere, I don't think they eat it, they play football with it! :o:(|)

i use a dustpan and brush to sweep up mess daily and i also use a dustbuster(handhelp vacuum) they help so much to keep it clean xxxxxx

So it, I'm sure it's fine and all nice for piggies feet :)! How are the wee one's getting on they becoming less timid?

Not really lol! They have their moments but once they are being cuddled, they are good. Ludo is getting better too, which is good. I guess they will always be nervous in some ways, I just want them to learn I mean no harm. :)

It is worth getting a few then I can swap and change when I clean them.

Ah, can't wait to use the fleece now!

I bought a few even got them an Xmas one lol... My baby is getting alot more adventuous, he doesn't hide just stays at the back of his cage but this morning I could swear he was considering coming to get his veg well I was still putting it down, he wheaks like crazy every morning lol...

Fred is a whole other story you don't see him for dust lol! rolleyes

Xmas one is a brilliant idea! Bet poundshops are overloaded with things like that! I might even get them a paw one that my pooch has. :)

Yeah they'd love that, I have to go home for Xmas will miss my babies so much cutting my visit short and all for them was tempted to take them but I wouldn't be able too ahhhhhhhhh, 8...

Ah - carry them in a stocking! :(|)

I know the perfect shop to go to on the way home, I was going there anyway so it is good timing. Home Bargains! I just love cheap shops, you can't beat them! :<>

How often do you need to wash them?

I am an idiot, I shouldn't have sold my other cage cos I have to clean the cage with them in it and they cry with despair cos they don't want me near them! 8...

Maybe pop them in a run well cleaning, I pop mine in the cage when cleaning the run and clean as fast as I can before they kill one another, they don't like being caged together hehe... and there wee faces come up to the door as if to say how could you lock us in lol :(|)

Every 3 days I do mine! :)

I am so glad I am changing over now, I could get a few fleeces for a few pounds each and it will save a fortune! I am nearly out of woodshavings again and they are nearly £5 a bag and messy!

Hopefully the fleece will be better for Hoggle's cauliflower willy, am I right?

Hi i use a bedding called carefresh it is dust free and better for guineas than woodshavings its quite exspensive tho for what you buy as my cage is big i use alot of it. you get carefresh from p@h i also cover the carefresh in hay they love it so much they popcorn! gl in what you choose and i know carefresh can be used on hansters it says so on the packing :-)

I've used carefresh and I detested the stuff... I just felt as if it didn't really do anything and was very costly this is just my opinion, but I do think it is down to the owner and the pig of what works for them. Their are so many different views and different beddings lol!

Carefresh I would only use for the beddin, I prefer just hay and the fleece I think it will save a fortune in the long run too!

But I would say carefresh is 100% better than sawdust!

Ah yes, I bought a small bag of that when I first got them, think it would be too expensive for my cage size but I do like it, my hammy has some in his igloo. :)

I use fleece and I love it. BUT it needs stuff doing to it every day or it smells.

In the HUGE cage I have 2 litter trays and every day I sweep out all the rest of the poo with a dustpan and brush I keep esp for that job.

I wash it every 3 days and yes I have 2 sets.

The other cage with the three in I wash every other day (Morks side is every day right now but only cause of his op). Again I sweep it out every day (only takes a few mins) and I do it with them in there. They will get used to you fussing in the cage. Because there is no litter tray in there it smells quicker I find.

Wash the fleece before you use it with no softner and never use softner on it. I put a bit of white vinegar in the softner part as it neutralises smells and it's dead cheap. Good thing about fleece is you can throw it over a chair after it comes out the machine and it's dry in a few hours - no heat needed. Perfect for winter.

I have dark fleeces as they don't show up the poo so quick for the big cage but the others have pale blue and it looks filthy quickly.

I must say my babies tend to go tiolet in there cage which is newspaper and hay so no problems :(|), So the fleece looks nicer for longer....

Good piggies xx>>>,

I must admit I love fleece looks pretty too!

I'm not too sure what wood pellets are but it should be ok, maybe someone else can offer advice rolleyes

I don't know about wood pellets either. I have 2 corner litter trays that are lined with newspaper and hay and above them are the hay racks so they munch the hay and tend to poop in there I guess by accident as they happen to be eating there, I don't think they go there to poop on purpose

I have got P@H wood pellet litter, it is supposed to be edible also in case the little mites try to have a bite but I doubt they will if it is full of wee!

I am going to use it on my hammy too so it is cleaner.
