Sadly, my darling Smudge died last week and Pickle is left alone. I don't want to rehome an older guinea and I don't want to have Pickle castrated in order to get a female guinea. That seems to leave me with two options: getting a new little one or staying as we are. The only interaction Pickle had with Smudge was to bully him. In fact, they ended up in a quarantine cage. Smudge was smaller and thinner, despite being the same age. I don't know if that is why Pickle kept throwing his weight around. Pickle now has the run of the lounge (I couldn't let him out before because he bullied and chewed). He comes on my bed each morning, there is no more chewing and he is much more bonded with me now. If I got a 8 week old, would he bully it or be protective?

I’m sorry for your loss.

Any bonding comes down to character compatibility so there is no way of knowing whether he would get on with another guinea pig until you try.
If you have the option, then the safest way to see is you can get him a new friend is by dating at a rescue centre.
