Hi everyone, so my two boars are entering their teenage stage :mal::bronco::yikes:...anyhow...I am wondering if I can use soft cat houses as hideaways or do they have to be out of fleece, especially made for guinea pigs? I saw several on the cages page here but not sure what brand they are. I do have a wood one and an Igloo but they do not like it, they like soft homes such as the fleece muff which they have. I am looking for more hide away options.

Thank you !

I bought mine those soft pyramid cat hides from Home Bargains (I think they were only around £4.99). I was a bit unsure initially, as they only have one entrance/exit and I usually like the boys' hides to have 2 in case of differences of opinion (!) but the opening is big enough that this hasn't been an issue. I didn't know if they would wash, but I thought at that price it was worth a gamble. I found that the hide itself washes and line dries just fine. The little cushion in the bottom went all twisted so I just made a few fleece ones to pop in, so that was OK. Also they are a great size to pop in a Snugglesafe when the weather is cold. :D

You can use the cat houses as long as they will stand frequent washes as they will almost certainly wee in them. My boars have the one that looks like a strawberry from Amazon. If you are getting teenage spats it's best to have two doorways so no one can get trapped inside. During the rumble grumble stage I used cardboard boxes with two holes cut in them, I removed their igloos (which they also use) for a while as they would trap each other in them and things would get quite heated for a while, they have them back now though as at 18 months old they have quietened down and rub along very well together (for boars!).

You can use cat houses, I use them and I know loads of other people do too :)
You just have to make sure your piggies are not chewing them and make sure you cut off any tags, even if they are hidden because the pigs will find them :D

These are the two cat houses my 2 have. They also have wooden and plastic ones. They love all of them :)

The brown one is from B&M. I think it was about £7. I think they had another pattern. The red one is from amazon and it was about £5. They have loads of different colours. :)

Thank you so much for all your replies. I will check and see what I find. Yes, two entrances are important, I have been going through large amounts of self cut cardboard boxes but they soil them so quickly. I will look for a large cat house or similar so they do not get trapped.

If you want a hidey with 2 doors I recommend this castle from Whelbands Assorted Pet Shelters. My piggies love it and it doubles as a hay loft! :)
I like putting a towel wrapped in fleece under it to make it extra soft for them :)

Oh, sorry, I didn't check! :mal:
Maybe someone near you makes them?

I've been looking at is products for a while and wondering whether to give them a try. I liked the look of the castle, but wondered if the ramp might be a bit steep - did your piggies take to it without any problems?

Market

I live in the east coast also I try to make my fleece stuff but have also ordered cavy caves and hides huts from the Guinea pig market you can see what type of stuff they have. They don't have much wooden stuff but a plastic hide and lots of fleece.

The ramp is a bit steep and I was worried my piggies wouldn't be able to go up it but they are fine. Well, Sammy is. He loves it! :) Lucky doesn't like going up stuff so he just pulls hay down or uses the hay rack. It's not the castle's fault though, he just doesn't like climbing anything. He's happy hiding under it :)

Chock has a wooden house that i got from pets at home here in the UK
Its meant for a rabbet but he loves it
