Okay so up until recently I owned eight guinea pigs all different ages youngest were newborn after I bought her and was told she was a boy which was 'confirmed' by a vet. Anyway as soon as I realized I removed the male in her cage and she gave birth to four healthy babies and one stillborn :( anyhow four days later I realized one of the babies had died I was sad but understand it happens. Then five days later another died. And then a week later another one. The vet couldn't recommend anything and don't seem to be any use. I was scared that maybe the mum had trampled them and removed the last one and put her in with one of my other Girls who was fifteen weeks old. Except a week later the baby girl died. I was very upset but thought there was something wrong with the litter generally. I put the mother in with the fifteen week old but now she's died too. I thought maybe she had an infection and passed it to the babies and that was that. Except I brought my two boys in to keep safe from the storm two days ago both the fifteen week old died and one of the boys all on one night. I'm confused I'm terrified for my last one. I've had guinea pigs for years and never experienced this. Any ideas as my vet doesn't seem to care

Really sorry for your loss. I'm not an expert by any means but I think the only way to be sure what caused them to pass away would be to have a post-mortem carried out. Again, so sorry for your loss.

Hi and welcome!

I am very sorry about your losses.

It sounds like your piggies have come with or picked up some kind of transmittable disease; the babies and the mother with a not yet developed immune system or overworked immune system are of course the ones most at risk and/or most likely to pick up something. As you haven't mentioned any symptoms, we can't even start to guess; not that we will ever be able to do more than guessing in the first place.

In view of the number of losses, it would be worth having a post mortem examination and any necessary lab tests done to get to the bottom of it. It is fairly rare, but there are some nasty things out there that can decimate groups. These are the kind of stuff of nightmares!

Please make sure that you quarantine any piggies in direct contact with the deceased ones for at least a month in order to prevent transmission to your other piggies. it is not quite clear to me from your text whether you have just one left or more.
Importance Of Quarantine

Make sure that you thoroughly clean any quarters with a vet grade disinfectant like F10 and you throw away anything wooden or fabric in contact with the deceased piggies.

It would help us a lot if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to location in your account details so we can help you better with recommendations. Aw, I so sorry to hear about all your losses x
I can’t advise you about what has happened but it seems like some sort of communicable disease
Try find a more caring and committed vet for the remainder of your piggies if you can, your vet doesn’t seem very interested x
